250-Pound SDB (Small
Diameter Bomb)
Notes: The SDB
was designed to allow aircraft to use smaller, more-accurate ordnance to make
surgical strikes on targets while jeopardizing as little innocent life as
possible. The SDB has a fire control bonus of +4, even if the releasing aircraft
has a lesser fire control bonus. In
general, only US-aligned aircraft use the SDB, for now anyway. They are normally
carried on an MER formed when an adapter is attached to a 2000-pound
(907-kilogram) bomb rack, and up to four may be carried on such a rack.
Of course, more adapters on larger racks may be used, or smaller numbers
of SDBs on smaller racks (or in singles, as on UAVs).
When released
and clear of the aircraft, the SDB pops out triangular wings sets pop out and
enable gliding of up to 110 kilometers when dropped at an altitude of at lease
4500 meters. (Get your trig ready
to figure out drops from lower altitudes!).
The base SDB (GBU-39/B) uses GPS/INS guidance to achieve a CEP of 5-8
meters. Link 16 on the dropping
aircraft or the equivalent are required to properly use the SDB; without this,
the SDB is simply a small and somewhat inaccurate, ordinary bomb, with -2 to hit
and becomes one level harder, unless the aircraft has a GPS receiver.
The SDB FLM
Focused Lethality Munition (GBU-39A/B) is essentially the same bomb at its base,
but replaces the steel fragmentation jacket with a frangible composite jacket to
further minimize unintended casualties, especially in urban warfare.
The Laser SDB
(GBU-39B/B) is essentially the same as a GBU-39B, but has a further laser seeker
in the nose which allows it to be used in a high-EW environment or against a
moving target. Note that the Laser SDB it still unable to hit targets in zero or
near-zero visibility, and can hit targets moving at a maximum speed of 80
kilometers per hour if the pilot wants to hit at normal chances. (1.5 times that
speed is Average, 2 times that speed is Difficult, 2.5 times that speed in
Impossible, and all other speeds are Very Impossible.)
The Laser SDB appeared on the scene at about the same time as the SDB II
Stormbreaker, but is still used by the Air Force and Navy as it is less
expensive than the Stormbreaker.
The Laser SDB can also be used against maritime targets.
Some other
versions of the SDB are being experimented with.
The SDB HOG-J (Home-on-GPS Jam) uses electronics from an AGM-88 HARM
missile; the bomb homes in on the enemy jamming signal;, then uses its GPS
guidance module to further localize the emitter and destroy it.
The SDB is being
tested with Scientific Systems’ ImageNav technology, which gives the SDB a
TERCOM-type guidance and the ability to match targets, even those moving, with
the ImageNav technology to increase CEP to as little as 3 meters.
The SDB AW
(Alternative Warhead) is a derivation of the M270’s GMLRS AW warhead to produce
a SADARM-type warhead, yet leave only inert components behind when the
individual projectiles do not find a target.
The SDB AW carries eight SADARM warheads, which hit on a d20 roll of 16.
The SDB II, now renamed as the Stormbreaker, (GBU-53/B) is somewhat
smaller than the SDB I, and is optimized for use against light armor and
soft-skinned vehicles. Furthermore,
it’s guidance system is designed for tracking and attacking moving vehicles, and
can also be used against maritime targets.
The Stormbreaker uses GPS/INS to guide itself into the general vicinity
of the target, with course correction updates using the aircraft’s Link 16
system over UHF radio. For terminal
guidance, the Stormbreaker switches to millimetric radar and IR.
The Stormbreaker also carries a database of vehicles and targets loaded
into it shortly before dropping using the aircraft’s Link 16 system.
The Stormbreaker can be used by aircraft that do not have Link 16 or its
equivalent (for NATO and other allied countries), but this essentially requires
that the Stormbreaker guide itself, and such use is at -2 to hit and becomes one
level harder. As stated, the
Stormbreaker is optimized for antivehicle use, and has a HEAT warhead with a
steel penetration nose.

*The
speed of this glide bomb depends on the speed of the reasing aircraft.
For the first 30 seconds, the Viper Strike has the speed of the releasing
aircraft; after that, speed diminishes every 20 seconds by 10%. They fall at a
10:1 ratio (falls 1m down for every 10m
it falls forward). However, the
fall rate and fall path can be steepened or turned
by pre-launch commands or by the launching aircraft.
It can also pull back up to its normal fall rate (essentially, performing
defensive maneuvers or adjusting to better hit the target,)

1000-Pound SFW
(Sensor-Fused Weapon):
This US weapon is cluster weapon containing 10
submunitions. Each submunition
contains a further 4 Skeet smart top-attack munitions, each with an explosively
formed penetrators, similar to the SADARM howitzer round.
These projectiles are released over the burst area on parachutes, each
seeking the nearest target via an infrared sensor.
When they sense a target, they fire as if a Tac Missile with a hit roll
of 13. If no targets are sensed, the munitions descend to the ground and
explode. Weight: 420 kg;
