Tikka M-55

Notes: This is a magazine-fed bolt-action rifle first introduced in the mid-1960s. It is a plain, simple rifle, with an oil-finished hardwood stock that has a pistol-grip-wrist stock. The rifle tolerates cold weather well, and the trigger guard is large. The bolt handle also has a large-diameter knob. Several variants were produced, including the Sporter, a heavy-barreled variant; the Super Sporter, with a synthetic stock and a rail for a bipod or other accessories; and two that are essentially identical to the standard version for game purposes: the DL, a deluxe version, and the SSP, a version with micro-adjustable sights.

Notes: This is basically an M-55 designed to fire long and Magnum rounds. Changes include lengthening the cocking piece shroud, and of course the necessary changes to fire higher-power ammunition. Variants include the Wildboar "carbine" model; the Sporter, with a long, heavy barrel and 7-round magazine, and Super Sporter, with a synthetic stock and a fluted barrel; and the Model 65A, with a bipod attachment, 10-round magazine, an anatomical pistol-trip wrist to the stock, and a recoil pad on the butt.

Tikka M-590/M-690 Popular

Notes: Originally known as the M-558 and M-658, the Popular was a replacement for the M-55 and M-65 series of rifles. The standard rifle is designed for short and medium-length cartridges, and has squarer contours than the previous rifle. The Popular has an adjustable trigger, and a Monte Carlo comb and cheekpiece. Variants include the Popular Battue (known as the Whitetail in North America), with a shorter barrel and a rear sight enclosed within a short ventilated rib; the Popular Continental, with a longer, heavier barrel, and larger magazine; and the Popular Deluxe, a version of the Popular with better woods and finishes.

Tikka Master Sporter M-595

Notes: By 2000, Tikka was a part of Sako Firearms. One of its newer products at the time of the war was the Master Sporter series; Tikka/Sako seemed to want to produce a hunting rifle that could be sold almost anywhere in the Western world and still find a compatible ammunition caliber. The smallest member of this series was the M-595, made for rounds from the .17 Remington round to the 7.62mm NATO. The stock and furniture are similar to that used on the TRG-21/41 sniper rifles; however, the wood used is of lower quality and does not come laminated from the manufacturer, making it highly susceptible to weather variations. It is an inexpensive weapon, however. The Tikka Master Sporter Series is seeing some limited military use as a sniper rifle.

The M-695 is a larger-caliber version of the M-595, made for more powerful cartridges. Other than a longer barrel and changes in the bolt, it is the same as the M-595. The M-695 Magnum is, as its name suggests, designed for Magnum cartridges; it has the longest barrel of the series.

Merc 2000 Notes: The Master Sporter series got a reputation as a "poor man’s sniper rifle," used by some smaller countries as a substitute for a dedicated sniper rifle.

Notes: The T3 is a new sporting rifle from Finland. There are two models; the T3 Hunter has a wooden stock, while the T3 Lite has a stock made of synthetics. The T3 is fitted with rings for a telescopic sight, and are fed from detachable magazines. The synthetic stock on the T3 Lite is very rigid and resists bending, cracking, and warping. Standard barrels are shorter than those for Magnum calibers.
