Beretta 500

Notes: This is basically a Mauser rifle under another name.  The basic rifle is a short-action weapon chambered for either .222 Remington or 5.56mm NATO.  The Model 501 is chambered for either .243 Winchester or 7.62mm NATO; it has no iron sights, but is drilled and tapped for a telescopic sight.  (Further development of this rifle led to the M-501 sniper rifle; see Italian Sniper Rifles.)  The Model 502 is chambered for even heavier cartridges.  Other rifles in this series are merely variations on these rifles, with differences in the stock or sights.  The standard stock for the Model 500 is of the Monte Carlo-style, with a half-length fore-end, and a North American-style cheekpiece.  The Model 500DL Deluxe (also known as Custom Grade) is the same, except that the stock is of high-quality walnut with a low hog’s back comb, a ventilated rubber recoil pad, checkering on the pistol grip wrist, and a Schnabel tip on the fore-end.  (There are also DL versions of the Model 501 and 502.)  The Model 500S, 501S, and 502S are simply versions of the standard weapons which have Williams-type adjustable rear iron sights and ramp front sights in addition to the drilling and tapping.

Beretta Mato

Notes: This bolt-action rifle was introduced in 1998.  It is based on the Mauser mechanism, has a walnut stock, with a synthetic stock as an option, and is a descendant of the Model 500 above.  The Mato is named after the Dakota word for “bear,” and is known for the quality of its construction.  The receiver is machined from a single block of high-quality steel, and the extractor has a large claw to ensure trouble-free extraction of spent rounds.  This extractor also acts to guide the next round properly into the chamber.  The magazine is a removable box, but may also be loaded from the top through the chamber.  The barrel is cold-forged for extra strength and durability.  The standard trigger is adjustable, but a preset trigger is an option.  Variants (identical to the standard version for game purposes) include the Mato Deluxe X-Tra Wood with a select walnut stock chosen for the beauty of its grain, the Mato Extra Deluxe, with a stock made from particularly fine wood and engraving on the receiver and the bottom of the magazine.  The Mato is drilled and tapped for a telescopic sight.  The Mato may be fitted with a flash suppressor or a muzzle brake, but this will not be covered here.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This rifle does not exist.

Sabatti Rover 600

Notes: This bolt-action rifle is a short-action weapon, designed for relatively small calibers that have short cases.  The Rover 600 has a 22-inch barrel and in its standard version has a Williams-type rear leaf sight adjustable for height, and is also drilled and tapped for a telescopic sight mount.  The Rover 600 DL is a more deluxe version which comes from the factory with a telescopic sight (the price includes this scope) on a special Sabatti swing mount.  The Rover 600 EDL is an even more deluxe version of the DL.  (The two are identical for game purposes, the all three shoot the same.) The Rover 600 has a safety catch on the right side which locks both the trigger and bolt.  The stock may be walnut or laminated walnut, and may be of standard pistol grip wrist style or with a Monte Carlo, Bavarian, or straight back stock (with or without a cheek plate).  There is also a Custom version based on the North American Varmint, which has no iron sights (but is drilled and tapped) and comes in an extended range of chamberings.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This rifle is not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Sabatti Rover 870

Notes: Parent rifle of the Rover 600, the Rover 870 is designed for longer and large cartridges.  Like the Rover 600, it uses a modified Mauser 98 action, and is made with a receiver and bolt of chrome-nickel steel and a barrel of chrome-molybdenum steel.  The rifling is cold forged into the barrel.  The barrel is very dense and resistant to wear and tear.  Unlike the Rover 600, the safety does not lock the bolt; it locks the trigger and firing pin.  The Rover 870 is designed for a plethora of cartridges; the barrel length depends upon the caliber, with most calibers using a 22-inch barrel, while magnum chamberings and the .25-06 Remington use a 24-inch barrel.  A left-handed version, the Rover 870 Mancini, is also made for all calibers.  Other versions include the Rover 870 Battue, which has special sights designed stalking game; the deluxe Rover 870 EDL, with a polished finish and a stock of select walnut root; and the Rover 870 Camo, which has both metal and wood finished in a variety of camouflage patterns depending upon the wished of the customer.  All of these are identical to the standard Rover 870 for game purposes.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The Rover 870 Camo is not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.  In addition, the Italian government prohibited the export of these weapons after the start of Italy’s involvement in the hostilities.

Uberti Revolver Carbine

Notes: This is not actually a bolt-action rifle, though I have included it here for simple lack of some other place to put it.  It is a reproduction of the Colt Revolver Carbine, and is as such a reproduction of a Colt Single-Action revolver with a shoulder stock added and a long 18-inch barrel.  The barrel is therefore carbine length, only two inches shorter than a Winchester Carbine of the same period.  When Colt first designed the Revolver Carbine, it was intended that it be a buntline with a 16-inch barrel and a skeletonized steel stock, but so many gunsmiths were modifying it with 18-inch barrels and permanently-attached wooden stocks that Colt began building them that way on a permanent basis, forming a sort of ad hoc carbine.  The reproduction, therefore, will appeal to a limited crowd, those looking for historical accuracy in an unusual weapon.  The stock is straight-wristed, with a blued barrel, cylinder, trigger, and trigger guard and color-case hardened frame and hammer.  The Revolver Carbine is otherwise a Colt Single Action, and the Uberti version is a faithful reproduction of that weapon.  There is no fore-end of any sort, so using it is a bit difficult especially with extended firing.
