Newton Sporting Rifle

Notes: Charles Newton is often regarded as the father of modern high-velocity rifle cartridges. He is best known for the now-obsolete Newton cartridges, but he also designed a rifle tailor-made to fire them. The Newton Sporting Rifle was best known for its seemingly-delicate looks, but toughness and durability.

His first pattern of rifles was designed specifically for the ammunition he designed, and was first produced in 1916. It did not do well on the market, but to be fair, it is probably World War 1 and Newton’s own poor business sense that sank the rifle, and not the rifle itself. These rifles had set triggers, a magazine loaded from a stripper clip (unlike most sporting arms), and were often grooved for a telescopic sight mount.

After the failure of his company, and several years of litigation to gain back his patents and even the use of his own name, Charles Newton came back with the Second Pattern Sporting Rifle, or the Buffalo Newton (after the city, not the animal). This again fired the cartridges he was famous for, as well as .30-06 Springfield. This time, however, the Great Depression sank the company, never to return.

Nosler Custom Rifle

Notes: Though Nosler is much more well-known for its quality ammunition, in 2005 it decided to produce a limited-run quality hunting rifle. Only 500 will be produced per year, for a as-yet-undetermined period of time. Nosler plans for each year of production to be chambered for a different cartridge, but only one cartridge per year; in 2005, the chosen cartridge is .300 Winchester Short Magnum, while for 2006, the chambering will be .280 Ackley. It is expected that in the future, the chosen chamberings will be based on cartridges which Nosler produces in its Custom Ammunition Line, but whether or not this is true is uncertain, and Nosler is not saying. When one buys a Nosler rifle, he gets virtually everything he could want or need – a very high-quality rifle, a scope and base, a sling, a metal carrying case, a letter of authenticity, and other such perks. The Nosler rifle is based around a custom-designed push-feed action, which is described as being smooth as silk and requires very little lubrication. Metalwork is primarily stainless steel finished with a custom matte ceramic finish. The scope sold with the rifle is a version of the Leupold VX III 3.5-10x40 designed specifically for this rifle. Weight is so evenly distributed that it seems lighter than the actual weight or the rifle. The barrel is a 24-inch Wiseman hand-lapped match-grade free-floating barrel with a target crown, giving the Nosler rifle sniper-rifle-like accuracy. Bob Nosler himself actually gives a money-back guarantee of the accuracy of the weapon. The trigger, though not adjustable, has a very light, crisp, and clean pull and breaks very evenly. The safety is three-position, allowing the bolt to be worked without the possibility of the weapon firing.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These rifles do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.
