Remington 30
Notes: This
rifle is basically an M-1917 Enfield rebuilt slightly to make it acceptable to
civilians. This was mainly a finish
change, but also included changes in caliber and a half-pistol-grip stock.
The initial chamberings were the native .30-06 Springfield and several
proprietary cartridges. In 1932,
the Model 30A appeared; this completely replaced the Remington proprietary
chamberings with more normal ones, and introduced drilling and tapping for a
telescopic sight. The initial Model
30 also had a carbine version, with a 20-inch barrel.

Remington 30S
Notes: Though
based on the standard Remington 30, the Model 30S is a different rifle, firing
different cartridges, having a stock with an improved shape with a recoil pad on
the butt, using better barrel bedding, and having different sights.
The 7mm Mauser chambering was introduced for European sales, though it
was abandoned once World War 2 started; the 7.65mm Mauser was made for sales to
South America, where the cartridge was popular at the time.
The remaining chamberings continued until 1940, when the design was
ended.

Remington 504
Notes: This
rifle was designed to compete with the Ruger 77/22, to be an “adult’s rimfire
rifle.” It is basically a rimfire
rifle built to the same standards as Remington’s larger-caliber rifles, with a
receiver machined from a solid steel block, a match-quality chrome-molt steel
barrel with a crowned muzzle, a fully adjustable trigger, and a fine-grain
oil-finished walnut stock. The
Model 504 is built to very tight tolerances, and the stock has a rubber recoil
pad. There are no iron sights, but
the Model 504 is drilled and tapped for a scope.
It is considered an accurate rifle that is very pleasant to shoot.

Remington 541-T
Notes: This
rifle has been around since 1972, when it was known as the Model 541-S Custom.
The 541-S Custom was built until 1984, when it was replaced by the
improved and modified Model 541-T.
The Model 541-T is a bolt-action rimfire rifle with a stock of walnut and a
fore-end of mahogany. It has no
iron sights, but the receiver is drilled and tapped for a telescopic sight.
A variant is the Model 541-T HB (Heavy Barrel); this version has a
target-quality heavy barrel which improves its range somewhat at the cost of a
little more weight.

Remington 580
Notes: Derived
from the earlier Model 540, the Model 580 was a rimfire rifle produced from
1967-78. The stock was made from
plain hardwood and used a low Monte Carlo comb.
The fore-end was rounded and large, as was the pistol grip wrist, leading
to excellent handling. The trigger guard
was large enough to put a gloved finger into it.
They had spring-leaf and elevator rear sights, and were also equipped
with a rail atop the receiver for telescopic sight mounts.
The standard Model 580 had a 24-inch barrel and fired .22 Short, .22
Long, and .22 Long Rifle ammunition interchangeably.
Variants
included the Model 580BR Boy’s Rifle, which had a slightly shorter stock and was
produced from 1971-78. The Model
581 was a magazine-fed version of the Model 580; a left-handed version was also
built, in rather small numbers. It
too could interchangeably fire .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle, but all
the cartridges in the magazine had to be of the same type of ammunition to
prevent feed problems. It was
produced alongside the Model 580 and outlasted it, built until 1983.
The Model 581S is externally almost identical to the Model 581, but uses
a smaller 5-round magazine, a hardwood stock finished to look like walnut, and a
tapering fore-end. The Model 582 is
a Model 580 fed by a full-length tubular magazine, produced from 1967-83.
The Model 591 was a short-lived variation; it was chambered for the
unusual 5mm Remington Magnum Rimfire cartridge and had plastic cap on the deep
pistol grip wrist. The Model 592
was a tubular magazine-fed version of the Model 591.

Remington 600
Notes: This is a
short, carbine-length rifle designed as a brush gun.
They use an action derived from the Model 700, with the bolt handle
angled so that it will clear the trigger guard.
They have a sighting rib above the barrel.
Variants include the Model 600 Magnum, with a 20-inch barrel, four-round
magazine, and chambered for one of two magnum rounds; the Model 660, which
eliminated the sighting rib (which was deemed by most buyers to be ugly), and
the Model 660 Magnum. The last two
are identical to the first two for game purposes.

Remington 673 Guide Rifle
Notes: This
weapon was produced in response to consumer demand for “a carbine with real
power.” It is designed around the
Remington Seven action, with a stock reminiscent of the Remington 600, and a
ventilated sighting rib above the barrel similar to that of the Remington 600,
in addition to a fully adjustable rear sight and a triangular front sight called
by Remington a “shark fin” pattern.
It is a medium-barreled rifle in unusual, but powerful calibers, with the barrel
being heavy for extra accuracy and to provide strength for its powerful
calibers. It is made as lightly as
possible without sacrificing strength or esthetics.
The Model 673 has a thick rubber recoil pad, and adjustable iron sights
as well as scope rings and a sighting rib.

Notes: This
weapon is a civilian bolt-action hunting rifle. A modified version is used as
the M-40 sniper rifle by the US Marines, and a highly modified version is the
M-24 SWS used by the US Army. It is
considered a "workhorse'' hunting rifle and has seen use from Alaska to South
Africa.
The Remington
700 chambered for .358 Taylor is a special case.
The .358 Taylor is essentially a wildcat magnum round, and the Remington
700BDL variants which fire them are made personally by Chuck Taylor; there are
probably less than 5 of them as of 2005, as they were built primarily to test
the .358 Taylor round. The barrel
used is a 26-inch Douglas Supreme barrel, which is step-crowned and heavy for
extra accuracy. The stock is a
matte gray H-S Precision synthetic stock.
The trigger is a Rifle Basix adjustable trigger (which Chuck Taylor
normally sets at 1.75 pounds). The
butt pad is rubber and is solid and textured to prevent slippage.
It is drilled and tapped for a scope (Chuck Taylor uses a Leupold Vari-X
III Tactical 3.5-10x50mm, but this is not included in the price below).
Note that the weight listed below is an estimate; if you know what the
actual weight of the Taylor Remington 700 is, let me know.
Twilight 2000
Notes: The Taylor Remington 700 does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Remington 700 ABG
Notes: The Model
700 ABG (African Big Game) is basically a version of the Model 700 designed for
powerful cartridges and somewhat more heavily built than the standard Model 700.
The barrel is longer than normal at 26 inches, and the magazine is
detachable (though small). The
receiver is drilled and tapped for a telescopic sight, but the Model 700 ABG
also has an adjustable folding rear leaf sight and a protected bead front sight.
The stock is of laminated hardwood, with a thick rubber recoil pad.
Twilight 2000
Notes: Not introduced until 2001, this rifle does not exist in the Twilight 2000
timeline.

Remington 700 APR
Notes:
Predecessor of the ABG, the APR (African Plains Rifle) is also designed for big
game hunting. It was introduced in
1994, and is (like the ABG) sold only through the Remington Custom Shop.
Like most of the Remington 700 magnum line, the barrel length is 26
inches, and the receiver and barrel are heavily made to withstand the pressures
of magnum cartridges. The stock is
of laminated hardwood (in light or dark colors), and has a thick rubber recoil
pad. The Model 700 APR has no iron
sights, but is drilled and tapped for a scope mount.
Twilight 2000
Notes: The following chamberings are not available in the Twilight 2000
timeline: 7mm Remington UltraMag, .300 Remington UltraMag, .338 Remington
UltraMag, .375 Remington UltraMag.
The other chamberings are rare.

Remington 700 AWR
Notes: This
rifle, launched in 1994, was also sold only through the Remington Custom Shop.
The AWR (Alaskan Wilderness Rifle) is similar in concept to the Remington
700 ABG and APR, but optimized for hunting in North America.
To cope with what are often cold and wet climate conditions, the AWR has
a stainless steel barrel and receiver which was matte blued until 2000; after
that, the standard finish was dull black Teflon.
The stock is made from a carbon fiber/Kevlar mix.
The barrel is shorter than most magnum-firing Remington 700s at 24
inches, but this helps, along with the synthetic stock, with keeping the weight
down. The exception to this is the
7mm Remington UltraMag and .375 Remington UltraMag chamberings; these two have
26-inch barrels.
Twilight 2000
Notes: The following chamberings do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline: 7mm
STW, 7mm Remington UltraMag, .300 Remington UltraMag, .338 Remington UltraMag,

Remington 700 BDL
Notes: The Model
700 BDL has been around since 1962, when it was introduced as a rifle with iron
sights in the scout position, and drilling and tapping to allow scopes to be
mounted in the standard or scout position.
However, production of the original versions of the BDL changed greatly
in the revision of the BDL in the early 2000s. It appeared over time in a
plethora of calibers, though the 6.5mm Remington Magnum and .350 Remington
Magnum were produced only in 1969, the .264 Winchester Magnum chambering was
discontinued in 1971, and 8mm Remington Magnum was discontinued in 1991.
However, several other chamberings were added from 1988-1993.
The original BDL is known for its fine-quality wood furniture, which is
laminated with a weatherproofing varnish and has hand-cut checkering on its
pistol grip wrist and fore-end. The
BDL is fitted with a magazine, accessed via a hinged floorplate under the
magazine compartment; however, rounds are loaded conventionally through the
action. The buttplate, pistol grip
wrist cap, and the fore-end tip (made of contrasting wood) are all separated
from the rest of the stock by a thin white spacer.
Barrels for standard calibers were 22 inches; magnum chamberings used a
24-inch barrel. The metalwork was
for the most part blued, but until the early 1970s, certain chamberings (.264
Winchester Magnum, 7mm Remington Magnum, and .300 Winchester Magnum) were
offered with a polished stainless steel barrel.
A left-handed version was introduced in 1973, chambered only for .270
Winchester, 7mm Remington Magnum, or .30-06 Springfield; later, the left-hander
was also available in .22-250 Winchester, .243 Winchester, and .338 Winchester
Magnum. Except for their
left-handed orientation, these rifles are identical for game purposes to their
right-handed counterparts.
Variants of the
BDL Include the Model 700 BDL DM, which is for the most part the same as the
standard Model 700 BDL. This
version was introduced in 1995. The
Model 700 BDL DM has a detachable magazine and a raised Monte Carlo stock, and
the lamination has a gloss finish.
Chamberings are more restricted, and the weight is a bit different, but for game
purposes, the BDL DM otherwise shoots like a BDL (with the exception of the
model firing .300 Weatherby Magnum, which has no standard BDL counterpart).
The Model 700 BDL European had a short production run from 1993-95;
Europeans did not take a shine to the rifle, though some others were sold in the
US, Canada, and Mexico. It is for
the most identical to the standard Model 700 BDL, but has a high-glass oil
finish for the stock and furniture, and chamberings were limited to .243
Winchester, .270 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, .30-06 Springfield, and 7mm
Remington Magnum. The Model 700 BDL
European performs identically to the standard Model 700 BDL of the appropriate
caliber for game purposes. The
Model 700 BDL SS is also a similar weapon to the basic BDL, but has metalwork of
matte stainless steel, a synthetic stock, and all chamberings have a 24-inch
barrel; it shoots identically to the BDL DM except for the .270 Winchester and
.30-06 Springfield chamberings, which have different characteristics than the
Model 700 BDL DM in the same caliber due to the use of a 24-inch barrel as
opposed to a 22-inch barrel. The
stock has a raised cheekpiece, but a straight comb.
The Model 700 SS-DM is the same weapon, but magazine-fed, and otherwise
shoots identically for game purposes to Model 700 BDL SS. The Model 700 SS-DM-B
uses exclusively magnum chamberings and has a barrel tipped by a muzzle brake.
The Model 700
BDL stopped production for a little over a year in the early 2000s.
When it reappeared, it was similar in appearance to the old BDL; however,
in many ways, it was radically changed.
The BDL line had been tightened and unified.
The stock remained of American Walnut, but with a high-glass finish.
The fore-end cap is of ebony, the stock was given a Monte Carlo comb, and
the fore-end and pistol grip wrist were given excellent skipline cut checkering.
The metalwork is deeply blued, with a slight gloss.
There is no detachable magazine, but the internal magazine has a hinged
floorplate. The rear sight is
adjustable and the front sight is hooded; the rear sight is in the scout
position. The new BDL uses the
X-Mark Pro trigger pack, allowing the shooter to adjust the trigger for pull
weight (factory pull weight is 3.5 pounds, but it can be adjusted 2 pounds
either way). The trigger pack also
produces a trigger pull with no creep and an even break.
The receiver is machined from solid bar-stock, and the new BDL has
Remington’s “three rings of steel” bolt face and lockup.
The barrel is a floating barrel with a target crown; .270 Winchester and
.30-06 Springfield use a 22-inch barrel, 7mm Remington UltraMag and .300
Remington UltraMag use a 26-inch barrel, and the other chamberings use a 24-inch
barrel. It should be noted that on
Remington’s web site (as of the time I write this, early February 2012), only
.243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, 7mm Remington Magnum, and
.300 Remington UltraMag are listed as “Current;” the other chamberings are
listed as “Discontinued.”
Twilight 2000
Notes: The original versions of the Model 700 BDL are available in the Twilight
2000 timeline. The Model 700 BDL DM
is also available, though it is a very rare version.
The New Model 700 BDLs are, however, not available in the Twilight 2000
timeline.

Remington 700 Classic Deluxe (CDL)
Notes: This is a
rifle for people who want a rifle that satisfies old-fashioned tastes, but with
some new design twists. It is sort
of a compromise between the Basic Deluxe and the Classic.
The furniture is of dark walnut, but with a fairly deep pistol grip and a
straight comb. The pistol grip and
forestock are finely checkered. The
metalwork is in a fine satin blue.
The recoil pad is substantial, over an inch thick.
The trigger pull is considered a bit excessive (seven pounds), but it is
easily adjustable by a gunsmith.
Magnum caliber CDL’s have a barrel of 26 inches; non-magnums have a 24-inch
barrel.
A relatively new
version of the Model 700 CDL is the CDL DM (for Detachable Magazine).
Furniture is of well-grained walnut with a checkered pistol grip wrist
and fore-end, as well as a thick rubber recoil pad on the butt.
The trigger pack is the X-Mark Pro trigger pack,
which has a factory-set pull weight of
3.5 pounds and is user-adjustable two pounds heavier or lighter, potentially
providing an extra measure of safety or turning the Predator into a hair-trigger
rifle. The X-Mark Trigger Pack is
made from stainless steel polished to a mirror-like finish, contributing to its
smoothness. The barrel is of
stainless steel, but the receiver is machined from solid steel barstock.
The barrel is free-floating, except for a small bedding area where the
receiver meets the barrel. External
metalwork is blued with a satin finish.
The barrels are 24 inches, exept for magnum chamberings, which use a
26-inch barrel.
The Model 700
CDL SF is a limited edition of the Model 700 CDL DM; it will be produced in
limited quantities only in 2011.
The Model 700 CDL SF has furniture of Grade III Walnut, a hand-fitted and
smoother action, the X-Mark Pro trigger pack, and an integral extractor which is
more reliable and supports the cartridge head.
The 24-inch barrel is not only free-floating, it is match-quality and has
a target crown. Other features are
as the Model 700 CDL DM. It is made only in one caliber; no announcement has
been made about any future special editions in different calibers.

Remington 700 EtronX
Notes: This
unusual variant of the Remington 700 was introduced in 2000.
It is still a bolt-action rifle, but that and the trigger are the only
moving parts, for the EtronX uses electronic ignition of the primer.
As a result, the EtronX requires special ammunition – variants of
standard ammunition which have special primers.
For game purposes, this ammunition shoots the same as standard ammunition
of the same type, but it cannot be used in standard weapons, even those of the
same chambering, and vice versa.
Ignition of the rounds happens very quickly (0.0000027 seconds), and there is no
delay from moving parts, so the bullet actually leaves the EtronX a fraction of
a second more quickly than that of a normal Remington 700.
Power for the ignition system is supplied by a removable 9-volt battery
in the stock, and LEDs indicate the power state of the battery and whether or
not the weapon is on safe or ready to fire.
Instead of a conventional safety, the EtronX has an on/off switch for the
ignition system. The receiver and
barrel are of stainless steel, and the stock is of black high-impact
plastic/Kevlar. The barrel is
rather long at 26 inches.

Remington 700 LSS
Notes: The
Remington 700 LSS (Laminated Stainless Steel) is a variant of the Remington 700
introduced in 1996. The term
“Laminated Stainless Steel” comes from the stock, made from laminated hardwood;
and the receiver, barrel, bolt, and floor of the magazine, which are of
stainless steel. This makes for a
rifle which is unusually resistant to the elements, especially for a
wooden-stocked rifle. The stock has
a thick rubber recoil pad. There
are no iron sights, but the Model 700 LSS is drilled and tapped for a scope
mount. When introduced, the Model
700 LSS was chambered only for 7mm Remington Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum,
but more such long-cased chamberings were added as the years went by.
The Remington 700 LSS uses a 24-inch barrel, except for the .30-06
chambering, which uses a 22-inch barrel, and the .300 Remington UltraMag
chambering, which uses a 26-inch barrel.

Remington 700 Safari
Notes: This is a
magnum big-game hunting rifle introduced in 1962, and originally known as the
Model 700 BDL Safari. It was
originally chambered in .358 Winchester Magnum, .375 H&H Magnum, and .458
Winchester Magnum, but in 1986, 8mm Remington Magnum was added, and in 1988 the
.358 Winchester Magnum chambering was dropped in favor of .416 Remington Magnum.
The barrel used is a heavy 24-inch barrel; the standard stock is of
hardwood. A variant is the Safari
KS; this version has a plastic/Kevlar stock and a 22-inch barrel, and was
introduced in 1989. In 1993, a
sub-variant of the KS was introduced, the KS Stainless; this version has
stainless steel metalwork, but is otherwise identical to the KS for game
purposes. There were also two
deluxe models, the Safari Grade and Safari Classic; these are identical to the
standard Model 700 Safari for game purposes.
The Safari was replaced by the Model 700 ABG in 2001.

Remington 700 Sendero SF
Notes: This
descendant of the Remington 700 Varmint (below) is designed to fire powerful
magnum rounds. It has a synthetic
stock made by H-S Precision and has a rubber recoil pad for the butt.
The Sendero was originally offered in .25-06 Remington, .270 Winchester,
7mm Remington Magnum, and .300 Weatherby Magnum, but the .270 option was dropped
in 1999 and several alternate chamberings were substituted.
The rifle is drilled and tapped for a scope mount, and can even take a
MIL-STD-1913 rail (though it does not come standard).
The receiver and barrel are matte blued and joined to the stock with an
aluminum block. The stock is of
Kevlar-reinforced polyurethane.
Between 1999 and
2001, a special version of the Sendero SF was built, called the Sendero
Composite. The barrel of this rifle
has a stainless steel lining, but the rest of the barrel is made from carbon
fiber. This results not only in
greatly-reduced weight, but also better cooling of the barrel.
Unfortunately, the Sendero Composite did not sell very well, perhaps
because the rifle had been lightened too much.
I think it is a rifle ahead of its time.
Twilight 2000
Notes: Only the original
chamberings are available, and this is a very rare rifle.
The Sendero Composite is not available at all in the Twilight 2000
timeline.

Remington 700 SPS
Notes: The Model
700 SPS AAC-SD (Special Purpose Synthetic, with the name of the suppressor)
comes with synthetic furniture, a recoil pad for the stock, and a drilling and
tapping for scope rings. There are
no iron sights. The barrel is threaded for a suppressor, as the name suggests;
it can also be fired without the suppressor, with the threads protected by a
screw-on cap. The barrel is a heavy
barrel. Though the suppressor
included is an AAC-SD, the Model 700 SPS AAC-SD will accept other 5/8-24
suppressors. The stock is Ghillie
Green, and the rifle has an X-Mark Pro adjustable stock.
It is designed for civilian as well as military and police use; civilian
use is for not to spook game. Barrel length is 20 inches.
In 2011, The Model 700 SPS (without suppressor) was given a Mossy Oak
Break-Up Infinity finish over most of the stock and furniture (the grips
portions of the pistol grip wrist and the fore-end are of gray textured rubber,
and the metalwork is matte gray). This is designated the Model 700 SPS Camo.
In addition, the barrel lengths are different: standard calibers use a
20-inch barrel (in the case of 5.56mm NATO, .243 Winchester, and 7mm-08
Remington) or 22 inches (in the case of .243 Winchester, 7mm-08 Winchester, .270
Winchester, or .30-06 Springfield); magnum chamberings use a 24-inch barrel.
The Model 700
SPS Tactical is billed as a “no-frills” version of the SPS, yet is still has the
X-Mark Pro trigger pack, a Super Cell recoil pad on the butt, and a 20-inch,
heavy-profile, hammer-forged barrel with a target crown.
The entire rifle is finished in black, including external metalwork and
the synthetic furniture. Hogue grip textures are molded into pistol grip wrist
and the fore-end. The stock and the
fore-end have sling swivels. There
are no iron sights, but the Model 700 SPS Tactical is drilled and tapped to
accept a variety of sight bases and rings.
Twilight 2000
Notes: None of the variants of the Remington 700 SPS exist in the Twilight 2000
timeline.

Remington 700 Titanium
Notes: As the
name suggests, this is a version of the Remington 700 with a receiver made from
titanium alloy. This makes the
Model 700 Titanium lighter than the standard Model 700, and the Model 700
Titanium gained the nickname “Ultimate Lightweight.”
The Model 700 Titanium was made this light in order to facilitate lugging
around in mountainous terrain. The
bolt is also modified to make it lighter (facilitated by the titanium alloy
construction), and the barrel is only 22 inches long and made from stainless
steel. The stock is made from a
type of carbon fiber called B&C, reinforced with Kevlar.
The rifle has no iron sights, but is drilled and tapped for a scope
mount. This rifle was introduced in
2001, but the 7.62mm NATO chambering was not added until 2002.
Twilight 2000
Notes: This rifle does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Remington 700 Varmint
Notes: This new,
small-caliber version of the Remington 700 was originally meant for varmint
hunting, but police quickly discovered that it also makes a valuable and handy
light tactical sniping rifle. The
standard model is the Varmint Special, introduced in 1967.
It comes in a variety of small calibers, and is accurate without having
to worry much about over-penetration.
It has a composite stock and a fluted barrel.
The barrel is free-floating, heavy, and quite long, and the rifle is
equipped with scope rings (but no iron sights).
The stock is made from walnut and has an ebony cap on the fore-end and is
of the Monte Carlo style. The
fore-end, pistol grip wrist cap, and butt plate are further decorated with white
spacers. The .25-06
chambering was dropped in 1989, and the Varmint Special was itself discontinued
in 1992.
Its replacement
was the Model 700 VS (not to be confused with the Varmint Special; the “VS” in
this case stands for Varmint Synthetic).
This new version was introduced in 1992, and has a stock of carbon
fiber/Kevlar. The barrel length is
increased to 26 inches. The receiver and barrel, made from steel, are matte
black in color. The .243 chambering
was not introduced until 1997. The
Remington 700 VLS (Varmint Laminated Stock) is similar, but has a stock made
from laminated hardwood, and comes in a different mix of chamberings.
It appeared in 1995. Another
variant of the Model 700 VS is the Model 700 VS SF (Varmint Synthetic Stainless
Fluted); this version has a synthetic stock, fluted barrel to save weight and
aid in cooling, and a stainless steel receiver and barrel. It appeared in 1998;
the .243 Winchester chambering was dropped in 1999, replaced by the .220 Swift.
A special version of the Model 700 VS SF appeared for a short time between 1998
and 2001; this was the Model 700 VS SF-P, with “P” standing for “Ported,” and
referring to compensator ports cut near the muzzle.
These are to help prevent fouling from carbon buildup, and are not
designed to counter barrel climb or felt recoil.
The Model 700 VS SF-P is identical to the Model VS SF for game terms,
except that is made only in .22 Swift, .22-250 Remington, and 7.62mm NATO
chamberings. An even more extreme
version of the Model 700 VS appeared in 1999, called the Model 700 VS Composite.
This rifle has a barrel with a stainless steel lining, but composed
largely of carbon fiber. This
combination provides for light weight and superior heat dissipation, but did not
sell well, and was taken off the market in 2002.
The Model 700
VTR A-TACS is an advanced variant of the Model 700 Varmint, differs in many ways
from the standard barrel. The stock
is synthetic, and is finished with a digitized pattern that actually absorbs
light shining on it to an extent.
In addition, the barrel and metalwork are externally finished in matte gray.
The butt is equipped with a rubber recoil pad.
The 22-inch barrel has an unusual external triangular cross-section which
gives the benefits of a heavy barrel without increasing the weight as much as a
standard heavy barrel would (and it still allows for a target crown.
The barrel is also free-floating, and at the muzzle end of the barrel are
three slotted ports to fight muzzle climb and felt recoil, as well as contribute
to barrel cooling. Like most modern
Remington rifles, the Model 700 VTR A-TACS uses the X-Mark Pro trigger pack,
which is made from stainless steel
polished to a mirror-like finish, contributing to its smoothness.
Remington’s web site is a bit confusing about the calibers of the Model
700 VTR A-TACS; the text of its description says that it is made in 5.56mm and
7.62mm versions, but the Specifications section only shows the 7.62mm
chambering. I have included both
below for completeness,
Twilight 2000
Notes: The following versions of the Remington 700 VS do not exist in the
Twilight 2000 timeline: Model 700 VLS, Model 700 VS SF, Model 700 VS SF-P, Model
700 VTR A-TACS and Model 700 VS Composite.
In addition, the Model 700 VS does not appear chambered in .243
Winchester.

Remington 700 XCR
Notes: As much a
sniper rifle as a hunting rifle, the Model 700 XCR is designed for precision
shooting at long range. Chamberings
therefore range from 5.56mm NATO to .375 H&H Magnum; barrels are match-quality
and floating. Barrels are 24 inches except for the 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm
Remington UltraMag, .300 Winchester Magnum, .300 Remington UltraMag, .338
Remington UltraMag, and .338 Winchester Magnum chamberings, which use a 26”
barrel. The Compact Tactical
version uses a short 20-inch barrel. The Tactical Long Range models all use a
26-inch barrel. Stocks are synthetic and grip points are textured for a sure
feel. Metalwork is of stainless steel, coated with (usually matte black) TriNyte
which provides excellent wear properties as well as a matte, non-glare finish.
The Model 700 XCR is designed for use with optics, and does not have iron
sights, being drilled and tapped for a scope mount or MIL-STD-1913 rail.
Finishes are black, olive green, bone/camouflage, or woodland camouflage.
The bolt handles are flared slightly for a positive grip.
The stock has a rubber SuperCell recoil pad.
The trigger pack is the X-Mark Pro match-quality trigger system, which is
somewhat adjustable and has a light touch.
The magazine is fed from underneath through a hinged floorplate.
The Model 700
XCR II is basically similar to the XCR, but the metalwork is in matte black to
cut down glare. The Model 700 XCR
II is also just a little lighter than the corresponding Model 700 XCR version,
but there is not enough of a weight difference to affect performance, and the
firing stats are the same for game purposes. Improvements include a receiver
machined from solid bar-stock for extra toughness and tighter tolerances, a
barrel with a target crown, a recessed bolt face a counterbored breech and with
the “three rings of steel” enclosing the cartridge head when it is chambered, an
integral extractor (the latter two improving reliability and providing for
positive bolt lockup), the X-Mark Pro adjustable trigger pack, a TriNyte
Corrosion Control coating on its metalwork, and a Supercell recoil pad on the
butt. Some chamberings are
also deleted from the Model 700 XCR II line, and it adds one more chambering.
Other differences include the .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Winchester
Magnum chamberings, which use a 24-inch barrel in the XCR II instead of a
26-inch barrel. The Model 700 XCR II Camo Bone Collector Edition is a deluxe
model designed by gunsmith Michael Waddell, and has its stock finished in a
Realtree AP HD pattern. The Camo
Bone Collector uses the TriNyte Corrosion Control coating, over matte-finished
stainless steel. Much of the
metalwork, particularly the receiver, is built from bar stock, providing
superior strength. The Model 700
XCR II Camo Bone Collector Edition comes only in one chambering, .30-06
Springfield. For game purposes, however, the Model 700 XCR II Camo Bone
Collector Edition is otherwise identical to the standard Model 700 XCR II.
The Model 700
XCR RMEF (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation) Edition is a standard Remington XCR
with a Realtree AP camouflage pattern for its stock and a bright metal nickel
finish over its TriNyte finish for its external metalwork.
Workmanship is in general of a higher order than on a standard Model 700
XCR. These versions have been produced every year since 2001 in limited
quantities each, with proceeds going to the RMEF. Chamberings were (in order of
year) .300 Remington UltraMag, 7mm Remington UltraMag, .300 Remington
Short-Action UltraMag. .300 Winchester Magnum, 7mm Remington Magnum, .300
Winchester Short Magnum, .300 Remington UltraMag, 7mm Remington UltraMag, and
.30-06 Springfield. 2010’s model is chambered for .25-06 Remington.
All barrels for the Model 700 XCR RMEF are 24 inches.
2011’s version is chambered for .300 Winchester Magnum, and is based on
XCR II instead of the XCR base; this means it has the refinements of the Model
700 XCR II, and is also slightly different in weight.
The XCR II RMEF retains the Realtree AP camouflage pattern on its stock
(the same weight as a Model XCR II in .300 Winchester Magnum).
Twilight 2000
Notes: The Remington Model 700 XCR is a rare rifle in the Twilight 2000
timeline. The Remington 700 XCR II
and the various Model 700 XCR/XCR II RMEF versions do not exist in the Twilight
2000 timeline.

Remington 710
Notes:
This is meant to be a more economical counterpart to the Remington 700.
This is done mostly by using more inexpensive synthetics for the stock
instead of wood, and a permanently bedded barrel instead one that can be
removed. The receiver is made from a fiberglass/reinforced nylon composite, with
a Teflon coating. Nonetheless, the
710 is not meant to be cheap in quality.
The stock has a fixed swelled cheekpiece, and the 710 is shipped with a
mounted 3-9x40 Bushnell Sharpshooter scope.
The trigger system includes the new ISS (Integrated Safety System), which
allows the trigger to be locked with a key.
The stock has a recoil pad.

Remington 720
Notes: This was
a rifle plagued more by patent troubles than anything else, and as a result,
only 2430 were built during less than a year of production.
It was a good design, with a fluted stock, a well-made pistol grip stock,
and a striker and bolt mechanism designed to reduce cocking time.
A version with a 22-inch barrel, the Model 720A, was also built, though
even less were made.

Remington 721A
Notes: This
bolt-action rifle was one of Remington’s first post-World War 2 designs.
It is a standard sort of bolt-action rifle, with a straight-comb half
stock. The rifle was originally
introduced in 1948 only in .270 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield; the .280
Remington cambering was not added until 1959, and the Model 721A Magnum was not
introduced until 1951. Deluxe
versions were also made.

Remington 725ADL
Notes: This
variant of the Model 721 was built only in the “ADL” format, i.e., in a deluxe
format using an improved stock with a Monte Carlo comb and ramp-style rear
sights, and contrasting woods. The
Model 725ADL is built largely for standard rounds, except for the Kodiak
variant, which is built for powerful Magnum chamberings.
The Kodiak also is equipped with a muzzle brake and a recoil pad, as well
as a 26” barrel.

Remington 788
Notes: This
rifle was designed to be inexpensive and easy to shoot and maintain.
The rifle centered around a common action and stock, but with different
magazines for different calibers.
And the calibers were sometimes strange for a bolt-action rifle.
It was not considered an attractive weapon and didn’t really sell very
well, though it was inexpensive.
The barrel was normally 22 inches, but the .222 Remington and .22-250 Remington
chamberings used a 24-inch barrel.
