Winchester Classic Custom Sharpshooter

Notes: The Custom Classic Sharpshooter, built in the Winchester Custom Shop, is designed to be one of the most accurate rifles sold by Winchester. Though there are "standard" versions, so to speak, the Custom Shop will chamber the rifle for virtually any caliber the customer wishes, and with virtually any sort of accessories, sights, and materials the customer wishes. Winchester claims the Custom Classic Sharpshooter is accurate enough to be easily used as a sniper rifle in addition to a very accurate hunting weapon.

"Standard" versions are chambered in 7.62mm NATO and .300 Winchester Magnum. The stock is a glass-bedded Classic McMillan synthetic stock. The barrel is a Schneider stainless steel barrel, target-crowned and 24 inches in 7.62mm and 26 inches in .300 Magnum. The stock has a virtually full pistol grip wrist, and a raised stock cheekpiece. Actions are virtually handmade, being hand-honed and hand-fitted. Sling mounts are fitted, which van also be used as mounts for a bipod and monopod if desired. No iron sights are provided, but drilling and tapping able to take anything from standard rings to a MIL-STD-1913 rail are provided.

It should be noted that the Custom Classic Sharpshooter was built after Winchester moved to Belgium.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The Classic Custom Sharpshooter does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Winchester M-43

Notes: This is a "junior rifle," a rifle meant for beginners and children as a first rifle. It has a surprising amount of features for a junior rifle, such as a 24-inch barrel, vernier rear sight, sling swivels, and a well-shaped bolt handle, as well as a generous selection of chamberings.

Winchester M-52

Notes: This rifle began as a heavy target rifle designed for competition in the National Rifle Matches, which were popular after World War 1. The original (M-52A) was a very large, heavy rifle, with a 28-inch barrel and curved box magazines. Later, the magazine design was simplified, the cocking piece was lightened, and the barrel shortened to 24 inches; this produced the M-52B. The top of the rifle had an iron sight, and was also drilled to accept a telescopic sight mount. Variants of note include the M-52 Heavy Barrel Target Rifle, with a heavy 24-inch barrel and a special match-style stock, as well as provision for target optical sights and counterweights. The M-52B Bull Gun had an extra-heavy barrel. The M-52C Heavy Barrel was as the M-52 Heavy Barrel Target Rifle, but had a heavy 28-inch barrel; the M-52C Bull Barrel had an extra-heavy barrel.

Winchester M-54

Notes: This rifle was designed specifically to provide a weapon to fire Thomas Johnson’s then-new (1925) .270 Winchester round. The M-54 was based on the Springfield M-1903, but has a smoother bolt stroke and bolt action. The stocks were plain straight walnut, and the receiver was grooved for a telescopic sight. Variants of note include the M-54 Carbine, with a 20-inch barrel; and the M-54 Sniper’s Rifle, with a 26-inch extra-heavy barrel.

Winchester M-56

Notes: This rifle, when introduced to the market in 1926, was supposed to provide a bridge of sorts between the simple Models 1902 and 1904 and the fancy Model 52. Unfortunately, most customers went for one of the others and bypassed the M-56; in addition, the price of the M-56 was too high at that time to attract many buyers. As a result, the M-56 was taken off the market in 1929. A variant is the M-57 "Accuracy Rifle;" this is basically a heavy-barreled M-56 with bases for a telescopic sight on the receiver. Though it was considered to be too light to be a serious target rifle, it was much more successful than the M-56, and was built until 1936 (though the .22 Short version was dropped in 1929).

Winchester M-69

Notes: Winchester had a long history with its single-shot rimfire designs, but found that as time went on, these single-shot designs could not compete in a marketplace that was moving to magazine-fed rimfire rifles of various types. Winchester therefore took an existing single-shot design, the Model 59, and made it into a box magazine-fed rifle. The stock was also improved, with a pistol-grip stock with a tapered fore-end. The result was a great success.

Variants included the M-72, using a tubular magazine, and the M-75, a target rifle that was actually used to train basic trainees during World War 2 in Basic Rifle Marksmanship in addition to being sold as a civilian rifle. The M-75 had a 28-inch barrel and was drilled and tapped for a scope.

Winchester M-70

Notes: This is another internationally popular American-made bolt-action rifle. The Model 70 is considered a classic among sportsmen and can be found the world over. There have been many versions over the years, in many different calibers; one of the newest is the version in .325 WSM, complete with a rubber recoil pad.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The version in .325 Winchester Short Magnum does not exist.

Winchester M-70XTR

Notes: This version of the M-70 uses a longer barrel and heavier construction. This not only allows for more accuracy, but also allows for the use of more powerful ammunition. The versions chambered for .30-06 JDJ Magnum and .475 A&M Magnum are extremely rare; most of them were built as a special order for specific people.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Rumors persist about some of the larger caliber versions of this rifle being used by US military snipers, but this is unconfirmed.
