Mercury Capri 1991-93
This Mercury
sports car is based on a convertible version of the Mazda 323.
It proved to not be as good as that car, powered with a sluggish
4-cylinder, decent 6-cylinder engine, or a V-8 that is almost too powerful for
the chassis and can lead to premature wear of the engine mounts and brakes (and
gulps fuel at an astonishing rate).
The rear end of the Capri can slide in hard turns and otherwise be hard to
control in cornering. Front seat
room is fair at best, and the rear seat is suitable only for small children;
think of it as an extra cargo space instead of a seat.
There are few conveniences or bells and whistles.

Mercury Capri 1994
This version of
the Capri is based on the Mazda Miata chassis.
It is a poor competitor for that car, being only slightly heavier and
having the same engine problems as the earlier Capri.
Handling is equally bad, with the rear end tending to slide in tight
turns or sometimes even not so tight turns, especially as the engines increase
in power, but the Capri of this time period is a front-wheel drive instead of
the rear-wheel drive of the Miata. Interior room is just as sparse as the
earlier Capri.

Mercury Cougar
1989-97
This is a
slightly better-appointed version of the Ford Thunderbird of the same time
period, slightly heavier due to a few more extras as standard added in than is
normal for a Thunderbird. By 1993
the upscale XR7 package was standard on all Cougars. Manual transmission is
available only on the version powered by the 210-horsepower supercharged V-6.
Dual airbags are installed starting on the 1994 model, and antilock
brakes are available as an option on all models.
Handling is excellent due to the wide track, and the interior is very
roomy. Ride depends on the
suspension, from the soft base and LX models to the harsh but precise-handling
SC. Traction is poor on wet or
slick pavement.

Mercury Grand Marquis
1992-00
The Grand
Marquis and the Ford Crown Victoria are virtually the same, being less
well-appointed, less expensive versions of the Lincoln Town Car.
They are large cars with a lot of interior room, and of the two, the
Grand Marquis is much more luxurious and has more options and accessories than
the Crown Victoria. The dashboard
controls are rather a long reach for most drivers and have small knobs and
buttons, especially the climate controls. The Grand Maquis itself is a very
large car that sometimes seems to float over bumps and jolts. The suspension is
also improved over the Crown Victoria; the Grand Marquis is better in handling
than the Crown Victoria in that regard.
The transmission is a bit smoother in shifting than the Crown Victoria,
and the Grand Marquis has rear-wheel drive.

Mercury Mountaineer
1997-00
This vehicle
uses the basic components of the Ford Explorer, and then improves on them.
The improvements are mainly to driver and passenger comfort, ranging from
things like On-Star (largely superfluous in post-nuclear society), a better
sound system, a redesigned interior with plusher and more comfortable seats,
better storage, etc. This is
coupled with a beefed-up suspension.
The Mountaineer eliminates the low-end engine and the 2-door model.
Towing capacity is 2.12 tons with the V-6s and 2.55 tons with the V-8s.
The 210-horsepower V-8 should accelerate more quickly than the 210-horsepower
V-6; there’s not really a game mechanic for this, but the GM should keep that in
mind.

Mercury Mystique
1995-00
This cousin of
the Ford Contour differs primarily in minor body details, the lack of the
Contour's high end 190 horsepower engine, and the more plush, better-equipped
interior, with better-quality upholstery or leather, more comfortable seats, a
better sound system, high-efficiency climate control, and items that are
standard on the Mystique that are normally options on the base Contour, such as
power equipment. Rear seat room can
get a bit tight, like on the Contour, for the tall or large.
Ride and handling are very good for a car of its class.

Mercury Sable 1992-95
This cousin of
the Ford Taurus emphasizes luxury more than the Taurus does, with generally
better upholstery or leather, seats, carpets, sound system, and climate control
than the base Taurus offers. The
rearmost seats are best for children or pets; even younger teenagers will feel
uncomfortable in those seats. A little seen, but available option for the Sable
is a tow package; with this, the Sable can tow 1.42 tons with the 3-liter
engine, and 1.85 tons with the 3.8-liter engine.
The tow package is much more likely to be encountered on the wagon
version than the sedan version.
Only these two engine options are available on the Sable of this period, both
V-6's, unlike the many choices available on the Taurus. There are few game
differences between the two engines; however, should the GM allow it, the
3.8-liter V-6 should accelerate faster than the 3-liter V-6.
Again, there’s no game mechanic for this, unfortunately.

Mercury Sable 1996-99
Just as the Ford
Taurus was updated for this period, so was the Sable.
Like the earlier Sable, this Sable is basically a higher luxury version
of the Taurus, with a few more features than the Taurus; however, the high-end
V-8 engine is missing from the Sable.
It is otherwise the same automobile as the Taurus of the same period,
except for some minor body styling differences.
Sables equipped with trailer hitches can tow 1.51 tons with the
145-horsepower engine, and 1.78 tons with the 200-horsepower engine.

Mercury Topaz 1987-94
Unlike its sister
vehicle, the Ford Tempo, the Topaz was not introduced to replace the
Contour/Mystique of the period (there was no Mystique at that time); it was
simply Mercury's equivalent to the Tempo.
Like most Mercurys, the Topaz is better appointed than the Tempo, with
better upholstery, seats, sound system, climate control, and standard features
that are options on Tempos like power accessories, but is otherwise similar to
the Tempo. The Topaz of 1987 and 1988 are noted for their cramped, dark,
claustrophobic interiors, but after that, the interior was reworked to get a bit
more room and brighten up the styling. The front seats are also a bit low, too
low to really get into a comfortable driving position.

Mercury Tracer
1991-96
This is
Mercury's version of the Ford Escort of the same time period.
Like most Mercury versions of Ford cars, it is generally the same as the
Ford car, except for the weight and a slightly greater degree of luxury, as well
as not being available in a hatchback version.
It is otherwise the same as the Ford Escort. They are actually imports,
being built in Mexico. Engines are merely adequate, and torque is lacking; don’t
try to pass on the freeway if the air conditioner is on. On the other hand, ride
is smooth with bumps absorbed well. Interior room is good, with the exception of
headroom if the optional sunroof is installed. Road noise is loud, including
tire roar.

Mercury Tracer
1997-99
As with earlier
Tracers, this is a Mercury version of the Ford Escort, this time of the 1997
model. As with earlier Tracers,
this version of the Escort has more extras and accessories as well as better
appointments. There is no
equivalent to the ZX2 coupe in the Tracer, and the high-end engine is also not
available on the Tracer. It is
otherwise the same vehicle as the 1997 Escort. This Tracer has dual airbags,
antilock brakes, and a standard automatic transmission (though a manual
transmission is available). The single 110-horsepower engine is merely adequate.
Headroom, leg room, and cargo space are likewise merely adequate, though the
rear seat folds for additional cargo space (but does not lie flat). Climate and
audio controls are easy to find and manipulate by the driver.

Mercury Villager
1993-98
This is one of
the few original Mercury designs.
While it is a decent design, it cannot generally match vehicles in the same
class by Ford, GM, or Chrysler. The
151-horsepower V-6 engine is only adequate for the purpose and does not provide
the raw power of other minivans in its class.
While road and wind noise are acceptable at lower speeds, at highway
speeds the rushing noise can get quite loud.
The Villager has a wide turning radius that can make it hard to maneuver
in parking lots and other such situations.
Where the Villager shines is its ride and handling, which is very
carlike, with even tight high speed turns very surefooted.
The suspension is firm and handles most bumps and potholes without
complaint. The front headroom and
legroom are good, but the middle and rear seats are set higher and the headroom
is not as good. This can also
hamper rearward vision by the driver when passengers are present in those seats.
The center and rear seats can be removed, but each weigh about 50 kg and
is very cumbersome. The Villager
has less interior room and lacks a lot of options present on competing minivans,
but is cheaper than most of them. Towing capacity is 1.59 tons.
In the same time
period, Nissan produced a minivan called the Quest.
Except for minor styling differences, this vehicle is the same as the
Villager.
