Oldsmobile Achieva
1994-97
This is a budget
sedan designed to compete with Japan's budget sedans.
It largely failed in that regard, not having the design or build quality
of its Japanese rivals. 4-cylinder
engines built before 1995 lack the quality of Japanese engines, being noisy and
having lots of vibration, though acceleration and power are good.
The suspension feels crude, with lots of banging and clanking over bumps
and providing a rather rough ride.
The available Computer Controlled Ride package softens this considerably, but
the noise remains at a high level.
The interior is the high point, roomy and well laid out, and plush compared to
most budget sedans.

Oldsmobile Aurora
1995-99
The engine of
the Aurora, while it will not provide neck-snapping acceleration, is of high
power and yields good performance.
The automatic transmission shifts so smoothly and silently you might think the
Aurora has some experimental form of continuously variable transmission.
Unfortunately, the engine requires premium gasoline for proper operation.
Road noise is noticeable, but not loud, but wind noise can be
overwhelming at high speed. Ride
and handling are excellent, and with the optional sports suspension, the ride is
stiffer, but the Aurora with this configuration is almost impossible to roll,
skid, or spin out. The Aurora is
considered a luxury sedan.

Oldsmobile Bravada
1996-00
This is an
Oldsmobile SUV, an off-road vehicle with luxury car appointments.
The most novel feature is its computer-controlled 4-wheel drive
mechanism, which apportions power to each of the four wheels depending upon
necessity, and works without active intervention by the driver.
This also makes the ride very smooth and handling very sure.
The interior is similar to that of a Chevy Blazer or GMC Jimmy, but with
controls and additions for more luxury/optional items.
This unfortunately also means that the rear seat is rather low, forcing
rear passengers to sit in what can be an uncomfortable position for long drives.
The interior has numerous cupholders, and the rear seat folds easily to
provide more cargo room. Towing
capacity is 2.27 tons.

Oldsmobile Custom
Cruiser 1987-90
This is a
full-sized station wagon, one of the last produced.
Cars with this design were largely replaced by minivans and SUVs later in
the 1990s, and the Custom Cruiser never sold well.
1990 Custom Cruisers have the poor door-mounted seat belts, but others
have normal ones. The engine
provides decent power, particularly for towing, but fuel economy is terrible.
The weight of the vehicle and the long wheelbase mean the Custom Cruiser
handles sluggishly and corners poorly, and even with power steering, turning the
Cruiser is difficult. The dashboard
is large, complicated, and riddled with buttons and knobs.
If the optional towing package is installed, towing capacity is 2.27
tons. The Custom Cruiser is not
available with manual transmission.

Oldsmobile Custom
Cruiser 1991-92
The 1991-92
version of the Cruiser differs from its predecessors primarily in having a
heavier, aerodynamic body and a more powerful engine, in addition to antilock
brakes and a driver's side airbag.
It is visually more pleasing, but still basically the same vehicle.
However, the new engine offers a dramatic increase in power and
performance. This design was abandoned after the 1992 model year in favor of the
far better selling minivans and SUVs. If the tow package is fitted, the towing
capacity is 2.27 tons.

Oldsmobile Cutlass
1997-99
This is basically a
better-appointed version of the Chevrolet Malibu, with extra features and
accessories standard on the Cutlass that are not present or options on the
Malibu. The Cutlass is about a
kilogram heavier than the Malibu, and eliminates the low-end 4-cylinder engine
of the Malibu, offering only the 6-cylinder.
The power steering feel is a bit vague, leading to a floaty feel. It is
otherwise similar to the Malibu.

Oldsmobile Cutlass
Calais 1987-91
This predecessor
of the Achieva was designed to be Oldsmobile's smallest car and compete with
cars such as the Buick Skylark and Pontiac Grand Am.
It is a compact car with a few good options and accouterments, but mainly
meant for the buyer on a budget.
The Calais uses the notorious door-mounted belts in front, which are not as
effective in stopping forward motion and get the driver and front seat passenger
tangled up when they climb in or out, but are good at making sure the two wear
them. Antilock brakes show up as an
option on 1991 models, but on the whole, the Cutlass Calais performs poorly in
collisions. Most of the engines do
have a lot of power, and handling is good, but ride quality can be rough.

Oldsmobile Cutlass
Ciera 1994-96
This is a
slightly stripped-down version of the Buick Century 1990-96 that is not offered
in coupe configuration. Only a very
few of these vehicles were sold with the 4-cylinder engine, and that version is
rather hard to find. Except for the
options and accessories package, and a small amount of body styling differences,
the Cutlass Ciera is similar to the Buick Century.

Oldsmobile Cutlass
Supreme 1988-97
This is a sports
coupe/sedan version of the Oldsmobile Cutlass series.
The base engine does not produce much power at low speeds, but a redesign
of the 4-cylinder engine, as well as the addition of 6-cylinder engines produce
much improved performance. The
problem with the Cutlass Supreme is that it is heavy for a car of its class, and
this hampers performance and fuel economy.
Like almost all Oldsmobiles, it is loaded, and has a sports suspension
that yields good handling and stability. It is a firm suspension, and ride
quality is somewhat sacrificed for handling.
Road noise, wind noise, and engine noise are all well controlled.
Later models improve the ride quality without sacrificing handling.
The front seats are plush, comfortable, and roomy, but the rear seats are
too low and soft for comfort on long trips.
Driver side airbags arrived on the 1994 model, with dual airbags being
installed after that. Antilock
brakes are optional until 1993 and standard after that point.

Oldsmobile
Eighty-Eight 1992-99
This is a
lower-priced luxury sedan, with not as ample options, but with more affordable.
Engines are adequate to good, and fuel economy is good for a car of its
class; unfortunately, premium fuel is required for proper performance.
The power steering is a little light and does not provide adequate road
feel or feedback, possibly leading to oversteering or understeering.
The suspension is very soft; this lends itself to excellent ride quality,
but handling suffers, especially in the area of body roll in turns.
Doors are big and interiors spacious, and all passengers can ride in
comfort.

Oldsmobile
Ninety-Eight 1991-97
This car follows
the former conservative Oldsmobile approach to cars, with an old-fashioned body
style, plenty of options and luxuries, a generous interior, and strong engines.
In those respects, it is similar to the Eighty-Eight, and it is a
less-expensive alternative to competitors' cars such as the Cadillac Fleetwood
and the Lincoln Town Car.
Performance is similar to that of the Eighty-Eight, and the interior space is
also similar, except that the Ninety-Eight is somewhat smaller inside.

Oldsmobile Silhouette
1994-96
This earlier
version of the Silhouette is an Oldsmobile version of an earlier Chevrolet
design, the Lumina APV. Like the
later Silhouette, the Oldsmobile version is a high-end version of the Chevrolet
design, with better upholstery, more comfortable seats, better accessories, and
more standard features. When
options are added to a Silhouette, the comfort and gadget levels can reach
astounding levels. It is a little
heavier, and considerably more RL expensive than its Chevy cousin, but is
otherwise the same vehicle. Towing
is 1.56 tons with the 120-horsepower engine, 1.83 tons with the 180-horsepower
engine, and 2 tons with the 165 and 170-horsepower engines.

Oldsmobile Silhouette
1997-00
This is a higher-end
version of the Chevrolet Venture minivan, with better upholstery, more
comfortable seats, better accessories, and features that come standard that are
options on the Venture. As a
result, it is a bit heavier than the Venture, and more costly, but more
enjoyable. Aside from this, there
are minor performance issues resulting from the increased weight, but it is
otherwise the same as the Venture.

Oldsmobile Toronado
1987-92
Despite sharing a body
with the Cadillac Eldorado and Buick Riviera, two popular cars of the time, the
Toronado did not sell well, and it was withdrawn after 1992.
The Toronado features the Visual Information Center, a digital dashboard
design that gives very precise information, but is trouble-prone and expensive
and difficult to fix. The
suspension is softer than its cousins, which gives it a better ride but mushy
handling. The room in the front
seats is good, but the rear seats are cramped and difficult to get into for
adults or even older teenagers. The
trunk is a little small for a car of its size (though more roomy in the later
editions), and most of the room under the body is taken up by the big V-6
engines. The Toronado grew halfway through it’s model iteration, but most of the
gain in room is in the trunk and it is larger inside only by the smallest
degree.
