Pontiac 6000 1988-91

This is one of the last of the A-Cars, sharing a chassis with the Buick Century, Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, and Chevrolet Celebrity.  1990-91 models got the awful GM door-mounted seat belts, and all models had antilock brakes, but airbags were never offered.  Engines range from underpowered to adequate, and no high-powered engines are offered.  The ride is firm but comfortable, except on bumpy roads.  Handling is as good as most cars in the class.  The interior room is adequate for all occupants.  Mechanically, like all A-Cars, the 6000 is trouble prone, requiring much attention.

Pontiac Bonneville 1992-99

This is a luxury sedan with excellent performance due to the powerful engines provided.  Of the three, the supercharged 240-horsepower V-6 is the most expensive to operate, having the worst fuel economy and requiring premium unleaded gasoline for proper operation.  The Bonneville is equipped only with an automatic transmission, but this transmission is smooth and prompt.  The Bonneville is equipped with Computer Control Ride, with three settings; the Normal setting is best for most purposes, the Touring mode is for highway driving, as with normal driving or city driving, the suspension gets a little too bouncy in this mode.  Performance mode is for enhanced handling and stability at all speeds; it is designed for winding roads and does not do well in absorbing bumps.  Interior space is ample and appointments plush.  The trunk is huge and low, easy to load.  Though there is no game metric for it, the supercharged engines (240 horsepower and the 225-horsepower engines) should accelerate faster and perform better than other comparable engines at high altitudes.

Pontiac Firebird 1993-00

This is a high-performance sports car, one of the "muscle cars."  There are three versions, the coupe, the convertible, and the Firebird Trans Am equipped with the most powerful V-8 320-horsepower engines.  The suspension is a compromise between a softer ride and handling, and strikes a good balance in this regard.  The high-performance tires whine loudly, increasing their noise as speed or severity or turns or maneuvers increase, but grip the road well.  The low suspension can make the Firebird hard to get into, especially for the tall.  Seat cushions are adequate for short trips, but can get uncomfortable on long drives.  Rear seats are worse, narrow, hard, and lacking in legroom or headroom.  The trunk is deep but small, not holding much.  If you want raw performance, this is the car for you, but otherwise, most other vehicles are more practical.

Pontiac Grand Am 1992-98

This is a compact sedan in a class with cars such as the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.  Performance with the base engines is only adequate, helped only by the Grand Am's low weight, but engine power greatly increases from there.  The engines are fuel efficient, but not as much as competitors' vehicles.  The base suspension offers a fairly good ride, but the more popular SE and GT versions have progressively better suspensions, trading ride quality for handling.  All models of the Grand Am are equipped with very efficient antilock brakes that stop the car unusually fast, and can lead to "nosedive." The rear seat room is better than most cars of this class due to thin front seat backs and better mounting of the rear seat.

Pontiac Grand Prix 1990-96

This is a more powerful sports coupe/sedan, a step up from the Grand Am, with better appointments, more room, and more engine power.  The base 4-cylinder offers a compromise between power and fuel economy, but the base 6-cylinder gives a better response at low speeds and better acceleration.  The turbocharged 205 horsepower V-6 also has excellent power response, but can suffer from a lag in power when the gas pedal is pushed at high speeds, a phenomenon known as "turbo lag."  The high-end V-6 offers the best speed, but less low speed power and acceleration.  Dashboard instrument and control placement on early models is awkward, but 1994 and later models have a greatly revised layout that is ergonomically sound.  The suspension is well tuned, combining ride and handling.  Handling is excellent on Grand Prixes equipped with the optional Y99 suspension package, at the expense of ride, The handling on this suspension rivals that of far more expensive European sports sedans.

Pontiac Grand Prix 1997-00

This reworked midsized Pontiac was on track to be a very high-selling car.  The engines of the previous model were replaced with more powerful ones, and this, coupled with only a modest increase in weight, increased performance.  Acceleration with all engines is fast, almost neck-snapping with the supercharged V-6; unfortunately, the supercharged engine requires premium fuel for proper performance.  The 1997 Grand Prix is available only in automatic transmission, but this transmission works seamlessly with the engine, providing quick bursts of power without complaint and shifting almost imperceptibly.  The 1997 Grand Prix is also more agile than previous models, with surefooted turns and good road feel; SE and GT models add a soft ride to this handling.  The interior is big, even with 5 people, but the back seats are not very comfortable.  The dashboard looks cluttered, but provides a lot of information.  The buttons for the stereo seem haphazardly placed and can be difficult to find in a hurry. The rear deck sits high, and the window opening is narrow, which can impede backing up maneuvers; I experienced this firsthand on a 1998 model, backing into another car on the lot during a test drive.  (Luckily, the damage was only cosmetic and I was not charged.)

Pontiac LeMans 1990-92

This version of the LeMans cannot be confused with the big, powerful namesake of the 1960s-1980s.  This LeMans is a small car designed for the first time buyer.  It is a German design built by Kia in South Korea under contract to Pontiac.  The vehicle suffers from design defects and poor quality control, and sales were also hurt by lack of availability due to strikes in Korea at the time of manufacture.  The worst design defect was the brakes; they were undersized, did not stop the vehicle well, and wore out very rapidly.  Another design defect are the engines, both weak and underpowered, and the base engine barely moves the car.  The front seat room is adequate, but adult rear seat occupants are not generally happy.  The best feature is the trunk, which is large and well-shaped.

Pontiac LeMans 1993

This is the last of the LeMans line, and a rather ignoble end to a good name.  The 96-horsepower engine was discontinued, and the vehicle is only a few kilograms lighter, so all you get is a cheap car with poor performance and a slightly better options set, and a slightly larger frame.  However, quality control was even worse on this model, and the crashworthiness is even worse.

Pontiac Sunbird 1987-94

My mother once owned the 1990 sedan version of this car, and was not impressed by it, trading it in the next year for a Toyota Corolla.  The Sunbird is not a mechanically reliable car, not is it strongly built, and little things go wrong with it all the time.  She was also not impressed with its performance, but this is probably because she had the base I-4 engine.  Handling is very good, however; the car has a stiff suspension that makes for good handling, but also makes the ride harsh.  There is an optional sport suspension, which has both a better ride and better handling.  The front seat room is good even for tall people, but the seats lack lower back support, which can make long trips uncomfortable.  Trunk space is good for a car of its size, but the opening is small, making loading difficult.  The rear seat folds down for storage of large items.

Pontiac Sunfire 1995-00

This is basically a product-improved Sunbird, with an improved suspension, longer wheelbase, and stiffer, stronger structure.  The interior is quite a bit larger and offers more room, especially in the back.  Steering response can be a bit lazy, however.  Engine noise at low speeds can be a bit loud, but settles down to a comfortable growl at higher speeds.  The engines provided are matched with an efficient automatic transmission, a rarity in a car of its class.  The 150-horsepower I-4 is actually two engines, one a 2.3-liter and one a 2.4-liter.  The 2.4-liter engine possesses more torque and should accelerate faster than the 2.3-liter engine.  There’s just no easy way to simulate this in game terms other than a GM’s call.

Pontiac Trans Sport 1990-96

This is another version of the Chevy Lumina APV minivan, this time sold by Pontiac.  It is lighter, but more expensive, using a wider array of more compact and more efficient extras and accessories, providing a greater level of luxury, and things like better upholstery, seat fabric or leather, and more comfortable seats.  The result is a minivan that is significantly more RL expensive than the Lumina APV, but a bit lighter.  The engines used in the Trans Sport are the same as in the Lumina APV, but slightly more fuel economy is realized due to better tuning and the lesser weight. Towing with the Trans Sport is 1.83 tons.

Pontiac Trans Sport 1997-00

This Pontiac minivan is a version of the Chevrolet Venture.  However, the Trans Sport 1997 is a loaded version of the Venture, with a plethora of accessories and options to fit almost any comfort level, even things like captain's chairs and a video system.  The result is a vehicle that is much more expensive and significantly heavier than the Venture, but an excellent value.  Of course, more equipment and accessories mean more things to break down, which may be a consideration in a Twilight 2000 scenario. The towing capacity is 1.87 tons.
