Saab 900 1994-98
This car
actually has a lot of useable cargo space and interior room despite its small
size. The engines used are powerful
and responsive, even when coupled with automatic transmission. There is a lot of
body lean in turns, but this belies the fact that the car has a lot of grip on
the road and can even handle many unorthodox maneuvers.
The short wheelbase along with the sports car style suspension means the
car handles well, but has a rather choppy ride over rough pavement.
Wind and road noise can come up to roaring levels, especially at high
speed. The ignition switch is in a somewhat awkward position that can be
disconcerting to new drivers of the vehicle, and the power window buttons are in
a counterintuitive position between the front seats.
Like most Saabs, the RL price can be a bit steep, but quality of
construction and crashworthiness is extremely high.

Saab 9000 1990-98
This midsized
sedan allowed Saab to compete with more expensive offerings from Volvo, Acura,
and Lexus. It is one of the last mainstream automobiles to offer a hatchback
version, and in fact, in 1996 Saab dropped the sedan versions of the 9000 to
concentrate solely on the hatchback.
The 9000 owner has a lot of different engines to choose from, and lots of
options and luxuries, as well as refinements such as power equipment and front
airbags, as well as side airbags on later models.
The standard engine is adequate for the vehicle. Turbocharged engines
(the 165 through 225 horsepower I-4s) offer much more power, but break down a
lot and are difficult and expensive to fix.
Handling is very good, but the ride is correspondingly harsh.
There is plenty of interior room as well as trunk space.
