Saturn Coupe 1991-96

This inexpensive car is sporty mainly in looks, not power, though it helps that it is a very light vehicle.  The engines are underpowered, and perform even worse with the automatic transmission.  Handling is adequate, but hardly stellar. The front seats are comfortable even for tall or large people, but the rear seats are best suited for pre-adolescents. The climate controls, up to the 1993 model year, are mounted way too low, requiring a great deal of feel and memorization or a long look away from the road to operate. This situation was rectified on later models. The main selling points of the Saturn Coupe (and all Saturn models) were its excellent construction and quality, its low RL price, and its used car certification program.

Saturn Coupe 1997-00

The main things that happened in the 1997 model year to the Saturn Coupe were the elimination of the 85-horsepower engine and a slight body style redesign. The room in the rear seat is a bit better, but anyone taller than about 5 feet 8 inches will still have problems.  The seats themselves are more comfortable for long trips. Handling is improved, but at the cost of ride, and the car is lighter, improving performance.  Still, with its low cost and excellent quality, it was a popular car.

Saturn Sedan/Wagon 1991-95

This is Saturn's bread and butter model, a vehicle that sold wildly well when it first came out and quite well in the years thereafter. The same engines used in the coupe of the period are used in these cars, but they don't perform quite as well in this heavier car as they do in the coupe, especially in the Wagon.  Headroom is good front and back, and legroom is good up front for all but the very tall, but legroom in back is limited and not comfortable for even moderately tall people.  The folding rear seat in the Wagon is even more uncomfortable, especially for long trips.

Saturn Sedan/Wagon 1996-00

This is an update of the Sedan/Wagon design, a slight body style change coupled with an elimination of the 85-horsepower engine and a better suspension. The automatic transmission in this model is also greatly improved, with shifting almost smooth. Front and back room is better, with front seat support for tall people and rear seats room good for those of about average height for an American male or shorter.
