Baikal IZH-18M

Notes: This single-barreled shotgun is related to the IZH-18MH rifle (see Russian Sporting Rifles). The shotgun is very simple, but the locking system is very effective, going very far to prevent accidental discharges and in general being very safe. There are several automatic safeties as well as a manual one. The standard IZH-18M has ejectors that only partially remove the spent shells from the chambers; the IZH-18EM has fully automatic ejectors, without ejecting unfired shells. The IZH-18MK is also similar, but has manually-cocked hammers. Virtually any sort of choke imaginable is available upon the demand, and the weapon is available in six gauges and several different barrel lengths for most gauges.

Baikal IZH-27M

Notes: This is sort of a double-barreled version of the IZH-18M; it is easily one of the most popular shotguns in Russia and the former Warsaw Pact. It has traditional design and construction; and is an over-and-under shotgun. The standard version has twin triggers, but the IZH-27M-1C version has a selective single trigger. All versions have an automatic safety as well as a manual safety. The standard version has standard extractors, but the IZH-27EM version has an ejector that will only eject spent cartridges. The ejectors on both weapons may be disabled by the shooter.

It has the automatic safeties and manual safety of other Baikal models, but gives up refinements such as the thick recoil pad and recoil bolts found on other Baikal shotguns, and in addition are built of cheaper woods in the stock. There are various versions, differing by caliber and barrel length, and in function. The IZH-43E has a selective ejector that only ejects spent cartridges. Most have double triggers, but the IZH-43-1C version has a single trigger and a barrel selector. (This version cannot fire both barrels at once.) The IZH-43K has external hammers that can be cocked independently.

Baikal IZH-94 Sever

Notes: This is a Russian combination gun (shotgun + rifle). The weapon has a fairly long barrel, but the overall length of the weapon is fairly short. The IZH-94 features a chamber-loaded indicator, but no automatic ejection for the spent shells. On the standard model, the top barrel is for the rifle round; the lower barrel is for the shotgun shell. The lower barrel tends to shoot a bit low. Upon buyer request, the barrels may be reversed.  The break-open action can be a bit stiff and difficult to operate. Stocks are of beech or walnut; the receiver and breech blocks are blued, while the barrels are finished in satin metal. The there is a preset for the rifle barrel in front of the trigger, and double triggers. There are several different models, firing different calibers of rifle bullets and different gauges and chamber lengths.

Notes: This standard sort of over-and-under shotgun, manufactured by TOZ since at least 1965. It comes in several gauges, but only one barrel length (28 inches). The stock and fore-end are made from beech or birch, polished and finished quite handsomely considering the wood used. The metalwork is steel, with the bores coated with hard chrome. The barrels have fixed chokes to the buyer’s choice, with the choices for the bottom barrel being Cylindrical, 1/4, or 1/2; the top barrel may have a choke of Cylindrical, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, or Full. The trigger is a double type, and the neck of the stock has a sliding safety which locks both triggers. Variants include the TOZ-34-ER, with automatic shell ejectors (the standard model has extractors only), and several TOZ-34 "Souvenir Models," which are fancier versions with select walnut root stocks and fore-ends, and engraving which may be inlaid with silver, gold, or mother-of-pearl.

The weapon may be breeched like a conventional single-barreled shotgun; this allows one to insert a 20 gauge shotgun shell of any type in the bottom barrel. The magazine feeds the top barrel, which is rifled and chambered for .22 Long Rifle rounds. On the neck of the weapon is a barrel selector to allow the shooter to fire from the shotgun barrel or the rifle barrel – both cannot be done simultaneously. As with many of TOZ’s weapons, there is also a deluxe model, with better woods, engraving, and inlays of silver.

Notes: This over-and-under shotgun is designed for actual use, rather than being primarily a work of art like the TOZ-109-12. The two barrels are formed together into a monobloc, and locks with double barrel blocks beneath this monobloc. The standard version has a single selective trigger, but a double trigger can also be had upon request. The barrels have fixed chokes; the bottom barrel may have a Cylindrical, 1/4, or 1/2 choke, and the top barrel may have a Cylindrical, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, or Full choke (buyer’s option). The standard gun has shell extractors, but a variant known as the TOZ-120-E has automatic shell ejectors. There are also Trap and Skeet versions, essentially similar to the standard gun except for a ventilated sighting rib above the top barrel. In addition, there is a deluxe version with a carved stock and an engraved breech inlaid with silver, gold, or mother of pearl.
