DAF YA-314

Notes: This is an older medium truck no longer in use by primary Dutch forces, but sometimes still found with territorial troops.  It was replaced by the YA-4440 and 4442, and the Spanish modified and updated it to become the Pegaso 3045D.  It is a cabover truck with a soft cap top and rear cargo area covered by removable canvas. The roof of the cab may be rolled back, the side windows folded, and the windshield folded forward. The cab does not even have a heater, but drivers knew a trick by which they opened a gap in the engine access panels in the cab to cause some engine heat (and noise and fumes) heated the cab. The seating in the rear is an extension of the rear wheel arches, and cannot be folded up. The YA-314 may tow 2.5 tons cross country or 3 tons on roads. The engine is a Hercules JXC gasoline engine developing 102 horsepower.

The YA-324 is similar, but has a reinforced suspension that allows a much superior ride; the YA314 was reportedly exhausting to ride in due to the bouncy ride. It also has a light for the interior of the cab, generally for reading maps.

Variants include an air compressor truck, hard body, radar towing vehicle, fuel or water tankers, and a dump truck.

DAF YA-4440

Notes: This predecessor of the YA-4442 (see below) was still in Dutch service by 1995, as well as in the service of Jordan, Portugal and Botswana.  It is a 4x4 medium truck that is based on proven commercial components.  It is of cabover construction, normally with a canvas-covered cargo body, but a fully enclosed metal cab, and the cab has a heater.  The cab has a hatch with a machinegun mount.  The cargo area's sideboards and tailgate can be quickly removed for the transport of bulk cargo.  Optional equipment includes an ALK HIAB cargo crane with a 4-ton capacity, automatic transmission, and a 4-ton winch (included in the stats below).  The YA-4440 is powered by a DAF DT turbodiesel with 153 horsepower.

Variants include a cargo/troop carrier, tanker, and container/shelter carrier.

DAF YA-4442

Notes: This is a medium 4x4 truck that began in Dutch service in 1988.  It is virtually identical to the YA-4440, but has a new radiator and a new DAF DNT turbocharged diesel engine developing 180 horsepower.  The vehicle is of cabover construction, with either a hard or soft-side cargo body; troop carriers and artillery tractors are normally canvas-covered while specialist vehicles are hard bodied.  The cargo area's sideboards and tailgate can be quickly removed for the transport of bulk cargo.  The cab is all-metal, and the cab roof has a hatch with a machinegun mount.  Optional equipment includes an ALK HIAB cargo crane with a 4-ton capacity, automatic transmission, and a 4-ton winch (included in the stats below).

The YA-4442 had disappointing export figures; in fact, the only export order was the three bought by Italy for evaluation.  The Italians chose not to order further YA-4442s. Variants include a cargo/troop carrier, tanker, and radar carrier.
