Csepel D-344

     Notes: This military medium truck was placed in service in 1961.  It is a combination and refinement of several earlier trucks.  It is otherwise a standard 4x4 truck of the era, with a long hood, cab behind that, and a rear cargo area. The cab has a metal roof, but the rear cargo area is covered by canvas over bows. The D-344 is powered by a Csepel D-414H four-cylinder diesel developing 100 horsepower, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. The transfer gearbox also includes the differential for the front axle, and the individual front wheels have independent drive shafts This allows for the engine to sit lower in the chassis, giving the D-344 a lower center of gravity, making it surer of foot on difficult terrain.  To increase this off-road performance, the transfer gearbox has a differential lock. The D-344 can tow 2 tons across country. The front bumper has a 4-ton-capacity winch.

     Variants include several hard van bodies, a tanker, an artillery tractor, a decontamination vehicle, and a bridging equipment carrier.

Csepel D-594.00

     Notes: This 4x4 medium truck is built and used by Hungary.  It is of cabover construction, and has a light steel cargo area with folding sides and tailgate.  The cab itself is all-metal. The cargo area is covered with canvas over bows.  The engine is a copy of an American Cummins B 5,9-180 diesel, developing 180 horsepower, and coupled with a Csepel S5-70U transmission. The steering and brakes are power assisted. If the D-594.00 stays on roads, it can haul 5 tons. Production of this truck ended in 1995 with the bankruptcy of Csepel.
