VFJ Shaktiman
Notes: This
medium truck is used by India and Bangladesh. It is based on an older German
design by MAN, and was manufactured from 1959 to 1996, with the last Indian
example being retired by 2009. It
is of conventional construction, with a front-mounted engine under a long hood,
cab behind it, and a rear cargo area.
Body panels have flat, angular surfaces to simplify production. The cargo
area is covered by a tubular metal framework that can be covered with canvas.
Initially, the Shaktiman had significant German parts manufacture, but in the
last few decades of its manufacture, components were all-Indian. The Shaktiman’s
engine is a D0026 M8A diesel developing 110 horsepower.
Variants include
a van body, artillery tractor, tanker, dump truck, and ambulance.
