Baikal MP-133
Notes: This is a
conventional pump-action shotgun designed for magnum 12-Gauge loads.
As with most Baikal shotguns, the user has a choice of many different
barrel lengths. The MP-133 has
several automatic safeties as well as a manual one.
It is supplied with screw-in interchangeable chokes.

Izhmash IZH-81
Notes: The
IZH-81 has four variants, plus one very unusual variant.
These variants are differentiated by their method of feed (and in one
case, the very odd method of feed), their stocks, and some differences in
weight. Most have a choice of 22,
23.6, or 27.6-inch barrels. All are
otherwise simple pump-action shotguns.
All may fire most types of 2.75-inch and 3-inch shells.
Most can be ordered with screw-in interchangeable chokes of various
types.
The IZH-81 base
version is essentially a conventional pump-action shotgun, though somewhat
lightly-built. The IZH-81 Jaguar is
virtually identical, but has a polymer stock with a pistol grip.
The IZH-81KM is also virtually identical to the standard IZH-81, but is
fed by a box magazine instead of an underbarrel tubular magazine.
The IZH-81 Fox Terrier has a receiver similar to that of the IZH-81KM,
but the barrel length is limited to 22 inches and the stock is a folding one
similar to that of the AK-74M assault rifle, along with a pistol grip.
Sights for variants of the IZH-81 are a simple notch rear and blade
front. These shotguns have been
available since 1994.
The MP-131K is a
very unusual variant of the IZH-81 – it has both an underbarrel tubular magazine
and a box magazine, and can feed from either one (though not both at once).
A dial on the box magazine changes the MP-131K from tubular magazine feed
to box magazine feed. The box
magazine is small, and is primarily intended for carrying special ammunition,
allowing, for example, a quick change from shot to slugs, standard to magnum
ammunition, or some other sort of special ammunition.
The barrel of the MP-131K does not accept interchangeable choke tubes and
is fixed at Improved Cylinder. The
MP-131K is sold to civilians, but the military and police are said to prefer the
version with a 22-inch barrel. The
MP-131K was not introduced until 1997; when it was first introduced, only a
22-inch-barrel model was available, though in a few months, versions with longer
barrels were being sold. The
MP-131K has the same front sight as the IZH-81 series, but the rear sight has a
grooved rail for optics and accessories in addition to the notch rear sight.
Twilight 2000
Notes: The Soviet military and police typically don’t use the IZH-81 series.
The MP-131K is available, but it is a rather rare weapon, and it is more
likely to be used by police than the military.

TOZ-94
Notes: Similar
in appearance to the TOZ-87, and related to the TOZ-194 below, the TOZ-94 is a
pump-action hunting shotgun. Like
the TOZ-87, it is made in several versions: the TOZ-94 with a 28-inch barrel and
fixed Full choke; the TOZ-94-01, similar to the TOZ-94, but with a ventilated
sighting rib above the barrel; The TOZ-94-02, with interchangeable chokes of
Cylindrical, 1/2, and Full, and a shorter 26-inch barrel; the TOZ-94-03, which
is the same as the TOZ-94-02 but has a ventilated sighting rib above the barrel;
and the TOZ-94-04, a weapon designed primarily for slugs, with a 21.25-inch
barrel and rifle-type sights, and with a high-impact plastic stock and fore-end.
As with the TOZ-87, the tubular magazine has a standard capacity of four
rounds, but a seven-round extended magazine is available.
The stock and fore-end are of walnut root.
These weapons were introduced in 2000.

TOZ-194
Notes: This
Russian shotgun operates in a manner similar to Western pump-actions, unlike the
RMB-93. The barrel and tubular
magazine are largely unshrouded in any way; this may seem to make the TOZ-194 a
bit fragile, but in fact it is very strongly-constructed, as well as being
simple to care for and use. Russian
forces and police seem to prefer the TOZ-194 with only a pistol grip and no
stock, though a folding stock is available to be attached to the end of the
weapon. (This may be due to the 21
1/4” barrel, long for a combat shotgun.)

Notes: The
Russians refer to the KS-23 as a “special carbine,” but the KS-23 is essentially
a very heavy-gauge shotgun or a light grenade launcher, depending upon how you
look at it. As the shells it fires
are more shotgun-like than grenade-like, most experts refer to it as a shotgun,
albeit on a very large scale. The
barrel of the KS-23 is very unusual; it is cut from rejected or shot-out 23mm
aircraft cannon barrels. Thus, the
gauge of the KS-23 is proprietary, but in Western terms is approximately
4-gauge.
The operation of
the KS-23 appears to be a derivative of Eugene Stoner’s system, adapted to
pump-action, but nonetheless using a similar bolt-carrier group with a multi-lug
bolt that locks into the steel barrel extension.
The receiver of the KS-23 is of light alloy, with steel operating parts
and a light alloy underbarrel tubular magazine.
The stock of the KS-23 is polymer, but conventional in layout.
The only concession to recoil is a thick rubber recoil pad on the KS-23.
There are several different shells available for the KS-23, and a muzzle
adapter allows the KS-23 to fire rifle grenades.
(A special ballistite cartridge is also required.)
There are two
variants of the KS-23. One of them,
the KS-23M, is essentially a KS-23 with a chopped barrel and without the
conventional stock; instead, the KS-23M has a pistol grip and a skeletonized
tubular metal stock which may be attached to the pistol grip.
Recently, a
variant of the KS-23, tentatively designated the “KS-23SM” in the West, has
appeared in Russian literature. It
has never been shown publicly, and has yet to be seen in the hands of troops.
This is a version which replaces the standard stock with a side-folding wire
stock, and feeds from a box magazine instead of an underbarrel tubular magazine.
The slide of this version also appears to completely surround the barrel.
Whether or not this is merely an experiment or something the Russians
plan to introduce in the future is as of yet unknown.

Tula RMB-93
Notes: This
shotgun is unusual for several reasons.
It may appear to the casual glance to be a typical pump-action
folding-stocked tactical shotgun, but a closer look will reveal that its
operation is very different from other such weapons.
The RMB-93 was designed for use by Russian Internal Security and police
forces, and is rarely used by the military.
The RMB-93’s
high-capacity tubular magazine is actually on top of the barrel, with the barrel
projecting out from underneath it.
The pump-action is also quite different from the typical pump-action shotgun –
it is actually a pump-forward design, with the slide action being raked forward
to eject a spent round and back again to chamber a new round.
When the slide is moved, the entire barrel moves as well.
Loading of the RMB-93 is done from a port in the top of the receiver, and
spent shells eject from the bottom of the receiver.
The trigger mechanism is DAO, with the initial trigger pull being rather
long and heavy. This enhances
safety, making sure inadvertent trigger pulls are not made by inexperienced or
stressed police officers. Most of
the metalwork is of steel, with furniture made from polymer.
Metalwork may be finished in phosphate, blue, or nickel plating, as well
as a variety of camouflage finishes or matte black.
Sights are rifle-type; chokes are adjustable by use of screw-in choke
tubes.
A variant, the
RM-93, is generally sold only to civilians; it is identical to the RMB-93 except
for the polymer fixed stock.
Twilight 2000
Notes: The RMB-93 exists only in small numbers in the Twilight 2000 timeline;
the RM-93 does not exist.
