Subaru
Impreza/Outback 1993-99
This is a
compact sedan, in a class with vehicles such as the Honda Civic, Geo Prizm, or
Toyota Corolla. The base 110
horsepower engine moves the vehicle around, but has no real life; several more
powerful engines are available. All
engines are rather loud and run a bit rough.
They are a little less rough when used with the automatic transmission,
but this transmission saps acceleration.
Fuel economy is very good with any engine.
An important option is All-Wheel Drive, which is standard on the Outback.
Interior space is average for a car of its class, which means that most adults
will be uncomfortable in the back seats and tall adults will be uncomfortable
even in the front. Cargo space
isn't so great, even in the wagon configuration.
In wagon configuration, and with a beefed-up suspension, this vehicle is
known as the Outback.

Subaru Justy 1989-94
This is a tiny
car designed to compete with cars like the Geo Metro and Ford Festiva, and is
the smallest Subaru in 20 years.
The Justy has some innovative features for such a small and inexpensive car,
such as continuously variable transmission.
The Justy has a choice of two tiny 3-cylinder engines whose only saving
grace are their fuel economy and the fact that they are moving a very small and
light car around. The Justy slows
noticeably on hills or when heavily loaded, and has little reserve power for
maneuvers such as passing. The
Justy is nimble and handles precisely, but the ride is rough and choppy.
The Justy should be considered just a two-seater, as the rear seats are
tiny, and most adults will not be comfortable in them.

Subaru Legacy 1990-94
Due to its cheap
RL price, this midsized car was more popular than one might expect from a
vehicle of its features and quality.
The engines are good, but the transmissions, whether manual or automatic,
seem a bit hesitant to change gears. The fuel economy is below average for a car
of its class, primarily due to the power of its engines.
Headroom and legroom are adequate, but not outstanding, and the rear door
openings are narrow and can be difficult to get into.
The Legacy does have a tilt steering wheel, something unusual for a car
of its class and time period.

Subaru Legacy 1995-99
This is an
updated Legacy, with a slight body redesign and slightly more powerful engines,
together with a lighter frame. The
engines used tend to get a little loud, but work well.
The suspension strikes a good balance between ride and handling, with
ride quality generally winning out.
The front end tends to nosedive when pressed with hard acceleration or hard
braking. Front headroom and legroom
are ample, and even slightly tall adults will be comfortable in the rear seats.

Subaru Loyale 1990-94
For a long time,
this was Subaru's bread and butter model -- so much so that it didn't have a
separate model name until 1990, when it was christened the Loyale.
For the 1994 model year, only the wagon with on-demand AWD is available.
The wagon configuration is the more common model, but there is also a sedan.
The engine is the weak point of the Loyale; it is underpowered, and
barely enough to move the vehicle when in all-wheel drive mode.
Handling is sluggish, with the Loyale driving like a much bigger vehicle.
The ride is also poor, bouncing over even small bumps or ruts.
The frameless windows are a major complaint, with people not noticing
them when they climb in or out and bumping their faces on them.
The cargo area is good-sized, as is the interior.

Subaru SVX 1992-97
This is Subaru's
sports car. This was not something
the general public wanted or expected from Subaru, expecting a lot of
fuel-efficient, cheap cars, so the SVX sold rather slowly.
The SVX is Subaru's standard sedan chassis with a turbocharged engine, a
sports suspension, and a healthy dose of options.
It is not very fuel efficient, but does have excellent handling and
performance. Ride is improved over
its predecessor at the expense of handling, however.
The SVX's side windows are unusual in that they do not roll all the way
down, even on the front doors. Room
in the front seats is ample, but back seat space is generally too tight for
adults.

Subaru XT 1988-91
This is the
predecessor to the SVX, using a standard Subaru sedan chassis with a
wedge-shaped body, an angular roof, and more powerful engines than those
generally being fitted to Subarus of that time period.
Sales of the XT were even poorer than the SVX.
Handling is somewhat better than the SVX, but ride is very bumpy and
choppy.
