Toyota 4Runner
1987-95
This is a Toyota
SUV in a class with vehicles like the Explorer, Grand Cherokee, Blazer, and
Jimmy. It is a mid-sized SUV, but
much smaller inside than most vehicles in its class.
The 4Runner rides very high, a feature that helps off-road performance,
but can make it difficult for some people to climb inside, and to load cargo
into the rear. Fuel economy is
mediocre at best, as is acceleration, especially with the base 4-cylinder
engine. The 4Runner was one of the
first SUVs to be equipped with shift on the fly 4-wheeled drive and 4-wheel
antilock brakes (in the 1990+ Model Year).
Unfortunately, the antilock brakes are optional, not standard.
There are a lot of options installed on the vehicle, which makes it more
RL expensive than others of its class.
Like most Toyota vehicles, the quality of construction and mechanical
components are very high. However,
due to the large steering wheel that sticks out quite a bit, combined with the
lack of an airbag, head-on collisions, even at moderate speeds, tend to be fatal
to the driver. Towing capacity is
1.23 tons with the 4-cylinder engines and 1.59 tons with the 6-cylinder engines.

Toyota 4Runner
1996-00
This improved
version of the 4Runner is both lighter and has more powerful engines.
This improves both on-road and off-road performance, especially its
hill-climbing capability. The
4-cylinder engine, though more powerful than on earlier models, lacks the torque
for heavy towing or bursts of power while passing, and most owners opted for the
6-cylinder engine. The engines used
on this model are much quieter than earlier models, however, and wind and tire
noise are also reduced. The ride is
carlike on roads and smoother off-road, with steering precise.
Running boards were installed on many customers' 4Runners, because the
step up to the interior is even higher than on earlier 4Runners.
Interior space is more generous, as is cargo space.
Unlike the previous model, this version of the 4Runner is only available
in 5-door configuration. Towing is
1.56 tons with the 4-cylinder engine, and 1.91 tons with the 6-cylinder engine.
Twilight 2000
Notes: Like the Mitsubishi Montero, this vehicle was produced in Japan for
several years after the November Nuclear Strikes, and acquired by many Japanese
staff and command officers as their vehicles.

Toyota Avalon 1995-99
This vehicle is
for people who want a somewhat more luxurious car than the Camry, but one that
has performance and handling of a similar ilk. The suspension is a bit firmer
than a Camry, but is still soft enough to absorb most road bumps and
imperfections without bouncing or feeling mushy.
The engine is the same as one of those used in the Camry, a very quiet
and smooth-running engine, but more highly and finely tuned and requiring
premium fuel. The normal amount of
passengers that may be carried is four, but an option on the Avalon is a front
bench seat, allowing a fifth passenger to be squeezed in.
Even the rear seat is comfortable for most adults, and the trunk is wide
and deep.

Toyota Camry 1992-96
Depending on the
options present, this is either a near-luxury or luxury sedan.
It was a competitor to the Lexus ES300 in the US market, and did well in
that competition, selling for RL many thousands less than the Lexus.
It is generally considered to be better built than the Lexus, though
perhaps less refined. Even the base
I-4 engines on the Camry give decent performance, and with one of the V-6
engines, performance is snappy. The
ride is soft, absorbing most bumps, yet the handling is crisp and cornering
sharp and sure. Even though the
wheelbase of the Camry puts it in the compact class, it has the interior room of
a midsize car. However, the seat
backs tend to be reclined a bit too much, which can lead to a stiff back on a
long trip.

Toyota Camry/Solara
1997-00
I was heavily
considering the 1998 Camry LE when I was shopping for a car in October of that
year. (I eventually decided to buy
American, and bought my Contour Sport. Ford was also offering 0.9% APR.)
The attractions of the Camry are many, including the quiet engines and
general lack of driving noise, the excellent handling, and smooth ride.
The automatic transmission is well matched with the engines, providing
smooth acceleration and little-noticed shifting.
The antilock brakes provide straight and short braking without the
nosedive common on quick-stopping cars.
The power steering tends to provide too much assist, leaving a poor road
feel. The Solara (the more plushly
appointed, coupe version of the Camry) has an even softer suspension that tends
to bounce or float over bumpy or uneven surfaces.
The backseat is roomier than earlier models, but less passengers in it
are more comfortable than the maximum seating.
Getting into that back seat is difficult on the Solara, and the trunk
space is smaller.

Toyota Celica 1990-93
This is one of
Toyota's bread and butter cars, sold in large numbers in most places in the
world. Celicas have good handling
and acceptable ride quality. The
ST, GT, and GT-S models have progressively better ride and handling, as well as
lesser body lean and crisper steering.
Three engines are available, all 4-cylinder, up to a turbocharged 200
horsepower. The soundproofing is
better than most cars in this class, but noise can still be intrusive.
The Celica has low seats, combined with high sides and rear, and this can
restrict vision. The legroom up
front is OK, but tall people might have to recline their seats somewhat to
obtain adequate headroom. The back
seat is best suited to children, and the trunk is small with a high opening that
can make loading difficult.

Toyota Celica 1994-99
This is a Celica
with a body style change, and a few other changes.
The option for the turbocharged 200 horsepower has been removed, but the
suspension is improved into one of the best of all compact cars.
The Celica is also slightly lighter than the previous iteration. The
high-end engines of this model of the Celica are the same as the mid-range
engines of the previous model of the Celica. Antilock brakes are still optional,
but with them, braking is very smooth and fast. The Celica does not perform as
well with an automatic transmission, but performance with it is still good.
The fuel economy has also been increased.
The engine is a little loud, and tire noise can get very loud.

Toyota Corolla
1993-97
This vehicle is
in a similar class and form to the Geo Prizm or a Honda Civic but is a slight
step up from those cars. The
engines provided are not powerful, but adequate in an economy car such as the
Corolla. The automatic transmission
can be a bit balky, especially when called upon to provide bursts in power, and
often the gas pedal needs to be floored.
The engines are all very economical, however.
The suspension is very good at absorbing bumps for a car of its size, and
the sound insulation makes the Corolla much quieter than similar vehicles.
The Corolla is roomier than its rivals, but the back seats are still best
suited for children. The back seat
can be folded down on the DX model to increase available cargo space.
There is a
105-horsepower 1.6-liter engine and a 105-horsepower 1.8-liter engine for this
model of the Corolla. Game-wise, there are no rules for this, but GMs should
note that the 1.8-liter engine should accelerate faster than the 1.6-liter
engine, as the 1.8-liter engine has 11.4% more torque.

Toyota Cressida
1990-92
This predecessor
of the Avalon was introduced as Toyota's most plush model.
It is known for its ability to accelerate rapidly and hold high speeds
without too much effort. (I had a
friend who was taught to drive on a Cressida and she had a hard time keeping the
speed from getting away from her.) The 190-horsepower I-6 engine offers good
performance, but consumes a lot of fuel for a car of its size.
The handling is good and the ride quality excellent.
The interior is spacious, even in the back seat, and is very well
appointed. Trunk space is likewise
large. The Cressida is available
only with automatic transmission.

Toyota Land Cruiser
1987-97
This was
one of the largest SUVs available during its time period.
Due to its size, the engines used in the Land Cruiser are underpowered,
despite their horsepower. Though
the wheel track is wide, it is not that wide compared to the height of the
vehicle (nearly 2 meters on the largest model), so body lean can be a problem in
turns and steep side grades. The
heavy weight also makes the engines work hard, consuming a lot of fuel.
The Land Cruiser uses a switchable 2WD/4WD up until the 1991 model year,
when the Land Cruiser was changed to be permanent 4WD. The size translates to a
high cargo capacity, and ample room for passengers.
The second and third seats can be removed, but they are heavy (over 45 kg
apiece and cumbersome). The short
wheelbase version was available only on the 1990 model.
Towing capacity is 1.65 tons with the 155-horsepower engine, and 2.27
tons with the 212-horsepower engine.

Toyota MR2 1991-95
This version of
the MR2 is the model that began to be offered after Toyota took a year off on
the design to refine it. The result
was a sports car that used components from several other Toyota cars along with
one of three engines, two low-power ones and one high-powered one.
The lower-power engines are still give decent performance given the MR2’s
low weight. Handling on the MR2 is excellent, rivaling that of many much
more-expensive sports cars. Braking
is adequate, excellent with the optional antilock brakes.
The ride is typical of sports cars, but not punishing.
Interior room is not good for tall or large people, and there are no back
seats.

Toyota Paseo 1992-97
This is a small,
economical car for the sporty crowd who cannot afford big engines or the fuel
they consume. Acceleration is slow,
and the engines vibrate when accelerating, especially in quick speed-ups.
The ride quality is excellent, with good bump absorption and excellent
cornering. The small size of the
Paseo and low power of the engines subtract somewhat from the handling and
general drivability. Road and tire
noise can get loud on coarse pavement and at high speeds.
The back seat is best suited for small children and toddlers, or maybe a
duffle bag, but trunk space is better than average for a car of its modest size.

Toyota Previa 1991-97
This is Toyota's
entry into the minivan market.
Performance is good with the supplied engines, but vibration and noise from the
engine can get high when it is pressed.
The automatic transmission version (more common than the manual
transmission) shifts smoothly and promptly, sacrificing only a little bit of
fuel mileage. The interior is very
roomy compared with others of its class.
The dashboard is a bit strange looking, being vaguely W-shaped, but it
actually places the controls and gauges in easy reach.
The only problem is the climate controls, which, though they are in a
good position, are poorly marked and can be a bit difficult to find for drivers
new to the Previa. The rearmost
seat, though designed for 3 people, is far more comfortable with only 2 people,
or three children. The center seat
can be removed and is lightweight, and the rear seat splits down the middle and
can be folded against the sides of the vehicle.
Towing capacity is 1.22 tons with the 138 hp engine and 1.59 tons with
the 161 hp engine.

Toyota RAV4 1996-00
The RAV4 is
known for combining a soft, carlike drive with stability in maneuvering and
tight turns. Tire roar is very
loud, as is wind rush, and the engine also can get noisy at high speeds or when
worked hard. The engines do not
have a lot of power, and this limits performance and fuel economy, though this
is mitigated somewhat by the RAV4's light weight.
The back seat can be quite a squeeze for adults, and larger adults can
find it difficult to fit through the narrow rear doors.
The 2-door version is even more limited in this regard.
There is poor visibility to the rear in the convertible model.
Twilight 2000
Notes: This mini-SUV might have sold better if the war had not intervened
(though it still sold well on the international market in the short time it was
exported, and built for several years after the November Nuclear Strikes on the
Japanese market).

Toyota Supra 1988-92
The Supra began
as a Celica with a 6-cylinder engine, but by 1988 had evolved into a sports
coupe competing with the Camaro and Firebird.
Engines are powerful, but not very fuel-efficient; however, performance
is good. The flaw in the Supra of
this period is its heavy construction, which saps a lot of the performance of
the engines, and makes it handle a bit more sluggishly than competitors' models,
though it is still pretty good. The
heavy construction is also solid construction, which gives the Supra a good
crash rating. There is a back seat, but it is best suited for children.

Toyota Supra 1993-97
This redesign of
the Supra is unmistakably a sports car, with styling similar to its competitors
around the world. The engines are
more powerful, and coupled with a decrease in weight of over 110 kilograms, this
leads to a dramatic increase in power.
Comfort levels have also been increased, with more interior room, but the
back seat is still best suited for those in their early teens.
The options package has been increased, with three trim levels available.
Handling is absolutely superb, among the best in its class, and ride,
while typical of sports cars, is still acceptable.

Toyota T-100 Pickup
1989-97
When Toyota
first marketed a pickup in the US, there was a storm of controversy (how dare
the Japanese make a pickup!). The
T-100 (and the Tacoma) became very popular throughout the world, being seen with
improvised weapon mounts in the bed in many trouble spots, such as Somalia,
Algeria, and other places in Africa, in Central America, and the Far East.
(Part of the Chadian-Libyan War in 1986-1987 is called the Toyota War due
to the widespread use of the Toyota T-100, Toyota Hilux, and Toyota Land Cruiser
by Chadian forces, mounting heavy machineguns, autocannons, rocket launchers,
and ATGMs.) The T-100 compares favorably with its Japanese counterparts, though
its engines do not have the power of comparable US pickups.
The comfort of the cab rates high, and the T-100 is a very easy truck to
drive. The ride is comfortable in
most situations, and handling is surefooted.
With the extended cab, you get rear seats, but these seats are very
tight, and adults will not be comfortable on a long trip.
Towing capacity is 1.33 tons with the 102 horsepower I-4, 1.41 tons with
the 116 horsepower I-4, 1.48 tons with the 142-horsepower I-4, 1.65 tons with
the 150 hp I-4, 1.81 tons with the 150 horsepower V-6, and 2.05 tons with the
190 horsepower V-6. In addition, though this is not covered in the Twilight
2000 rules, the 150-horsepower V-6 engine should accelerate faster than the
150-horsepower I-4.

Toyota Tacoma 1995-00
This compact
pickup was designed to compete with some of the smaller US pickups.
It fails in this regard, not being equipped with the powerful torque
engines of US pickups, and having a very poor suspension that can lead to a
painful level of bumping and bouncing over even small potholes or rocks.
The weak suspension also limits the towing capacity. The handling is
adequate at best, but the brakes work well.
The interior is spartan, with few amenities.
The space behind the front seats in the standard cab is small, and in the
extended cab, the rear seats are best suited for children or perhaps one adult
stretched out. Cargo capacity is
competitive, but towing ratings are low.
Perhaps the only plus point in the Tacoma is the general quality of
construction, which makes the Tacoma a very solidly built vehicle.
Towing capacity is 1.48 tons with the 142-horsepower I-4, 1.65 tons with
the 150 horsepower I-4, and 2.05 tons with the 190 horsepower V-6.

Toyota Tercel 1991-94
This is a tiny
subcompact car with an equally tiny 82-horsepower engine.
The engine delivers excellent gas mileage, but poor performance, and can
feel stressed at highway speeds and slow to downshift.
The suspension is bouncy and handling hampered by the short wheelbase and
tiny wheels and tires. Noise is
high in every area. The interior is
surprisingly large for such a small car. With plenty of space up front and
enough space for 5' 10" adults in back as long as you don't try to put too many
back there, headroom and legroom are surprisingly good for such a small car.
There are few amenities.
Toyota has made the Tercel the lowest RL priced car in its lineup, and you get
what you pay for.

Toyota Tercel 1995-97
With the same
weight as the earlier model but a more powerful engine, this model of the Tercel
has better performance, but is noisier.
The transmission shows the same deficiencies as earlier models, being
slow to downshift, especially at high speeds.
The suspension is equally poor, and handling is only slightly better.
Interior space is slightly improved, but this is at the expense of trunk
space. The saving graces of the
Tercel are the low prices and high mechanical reliability.
