Ljutic Space Rifle

Notes: This exotic-looking (some would say weird-looking) single-shot bolt-action rifle was primarily custom-made to the customer’s requirements, but some were made for “off-the-shelf” sales.  The Space Rifle, sometimes called the Recoilless Space Rifle due to a design that lends itself to very low recoil for the rounds it fires, resembles nothing so much as a long tube, with a pistol grip, sights, and a rudimentary-looking (though effective and comfortable) stock added on, seemingly as an afterthought.  In fact, the Space Rifle is very effective at producing accurate single shots with relatively little recoil.  The barrel is a heavy, 24-inch, match-quality design, drilled and tapped for a scope.  The sights are detachable, as are the included scope mounts, and a sighting rib of sorts can also be mounted.  The weapon is loaded by twisting the fore-end, releasing the barrel to allow it to be pulled forward, and then pulled back again after insertion of a round into the chamber, and then the weapon is cocked by a small handle below the receiver.  The trigger is not only adjustable, the normal design was in fact a simple button to be pushed by the thumb.  The butt has a recoil pad, and the stock tube also incorporates a recoil dampening device.  Considered too odd-looking by most potential customers, the Space Rifle was produced only in small numbers, with production ceasing in the late 1980s.

Marlin-Ballard No 1 Hunter

Notes: Designed very much to test the potential market, the No. 1 Hunter did sell well and Marlin-Ballard went on to the No 2.

The original No 1 Hunter was introduced in 1876, in .44 centerfire and .44 rimfire chamberings.  Marlin, shortly thereafter, invented a special firing pin that could work with rimfire and centerfire rounds (On No x rifles).  The No 1 could have a 26, 28, or 30-inch round barrels, with round barrels only; however, the rifles used a Marlin-patent extractor that would be later used on such rifles.   The rear sight is a standing block rear sight, and the forearm is a bit stubby. A few chamberings -- ,45-70, .44 Ballard Long, and .44 Ballard Extra Long – were added a few years after the start of production.

The Model 1 ½ was built for a short time in 1879-1883.  It was essentially a No 1 with an extra-heavy wrought iron frame.  Only two chamberings were used and the barrel was 32 inches long.  The Model 1 ½ had a rifle-type buttplate and Rocky Mountain-type sights.

The Model 1 Ύ was essentially No 1 with a double set trigger, and chambered for the same rounds as the No 1 ½. Other than the set trigger and some minor caliber differences, this is similar to the No 1 ½; also note that for game purposes, the .40-65 and .40-70 Ballard are identical.

Marlin-Ballard No 2 Sporting

Notes: Definitely influenced by the Remington No 2, the Marlin-Ballard version is a bit heavier than the Remington Rifle, and the lockwork and firing mechanism is different, and also much heavier.  (The action is a Ballard action instead of the Remington No 2 action.) It was produced from 1876-1891.The Marlin-Ballard is simply made of tougher stuff: a walnut stock and fore-end, a butt which is curved for the shoulder, and a light vernier rear sight which is attached to the tang.  The rear sight can be folded down, and the shooter may use the notch just in front of the action. The front sight is a small blade with a protective plating of gold. The action, wrist, trigger and lever, and barrel are steel, but plated with brass, again for protection. Despite competition from Remington, the Marlin-Ballard was a popular hunting rifle.  Various barrel lengths were made: 26, 28, and 30 inches.  The barrel is heavier then the Remington, which also contributes to its weight.

Marlin-Ballard No.4 Perfection Rifle

Notes: Developed from the No 1 and No 2, the No 4 was introduced was intended primarily for hunting and target shooting.  This is the reason for the heavy octagonal barrel and the precise fit of the guns’ parts.  Though standard shells could be used in the No 4, the gun was specially designed to allow for cartridge reloading and ejection and firing did not do the sort of damage normally done to cases by rifles of the period.  The No 4 was made in guns ranging to a small-game-appropriate ,32-40; chamberings went up to .50, and all were centerfire cartridges.  These were joined by other cartridges are the years went by, to satisfy user letters. For the most of construction (1876-1889), but Marlin began dropping chamberings with time, and by 1883 and the end of the production run, the No 4 was chambered with only .32-40, .38-55, and .40-65,  It was a heavy rifle nonetheless, but respected for it’s stable platform and it’s seeming imperviousness to weather.

The No 4 ½ Mid-Range was designed for shorter (and in the right hands, faster) length, lesser weight, and quicker aiming.  The barrels were all 30 inches, but could be half-octagonal or full octagonal in cross-section.  The straight wrist was preplaced by a pistol-grip-wrist, and the forearm was increased in length to support half the length of the barrel. Being some 14 inches long.  The woodwork was of American walnut and was typically at least checkered on the forearm and grip, is not found with more elaborate woodworking.  The sight was a ladder folding sight raising from the wrist; another rear sight above the receiver was an improved peep sight, with a gold-plated globe for a front sight.  Metal areas were normally plated in brass as delivered or bought.

The No. 4A1 was a minor variant designed primarily as a minor luxury buy.  The No. 4A1 used a Fine English Walnut stock with a globe front, a peep rear, and on the tang, a flip-up vernier sight.  Attached to front sight was a length (maybe 10mm long or so) of brightly-colored yard to serve as a wind estimation gauge.  For game purposes, the No, 4A1 is identical to the standard No. 4.

A few dozen No. 4s were used in combat here and there, most notably in the Boer War, India, and even as late as World War 1. They were normally weapons brought to combat by their owners in an environment freer about such things.  They typically had to be abandoned or sent home over logistics issues, Except as noted, barrels of these rifles were 30 or 32 inches, full-octagonal in profile.  The butt plate was curved and textured, and checkering is found elsewhere in heavy grip areas such as the fore-end and wrist.
